Trump administration says immigration enforcement threatens higher food prices



In an unusual acknowledgment, the Labor Department said that tougher immigration enforcement is hurting farmers and the food supply






The Labor Department warned in an obscure document filed with the Federal Register last week that “the near total cessation of the inflow of illegal aliens” is threatening “the stability of domestic food production and prices for U.S. consumers.”



“Unless the Department acts immediately to provide a source of stable and lawful labor, this threat will grow,” with increased funding for immigration enforcement from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the Labor Department said in the Federal Register, which is the place where all proposed rules are recorded for the public to view and comment.



Also, contradicting comments made by Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins that the U.S. farm workforce will become “100 percent American” as a result of mass deportations, the Labor Department noted that Americans are not willing to step into farm work and lack the skills to fill agricultural jobs that undocumented immigrants are abandoning.

Americans have no interest in becoming farm workers and the wages are low. An agency was recruiting for farmers in Louisiana and the rate was $11 for 9-10 hours. That isn’t a livable wage and many are losing their farms now. That isn’t only due to deportation. Their reliance on government subsidies is the problem. The farmers who didn’t are fine.

Inflation under Biden fell faster than any other G-8 nation.
What is happening under Trump is what Trump has enacted all by himself. The comparison is not the same at all.

According to Myers, these seasonal workers – some from Mexico, some from South Africa and other countries – are granted a visa for up to nine months after being interviewed to determine whether they qualify. Owyhee then provides their travel to the farm, and their housing – "everything, really, when they're here except for food and clothing. That's part of the requirements," said Myers.

Given the cost and requirements, it may seem easier to hire local workers instead. Not so, according to Myers.

"We would love to hire people from here. The reality is that we can't find the numbers of people here," Myers told ABC News. "We're in a rural area, number one. Number two: This is hard work. It is difficult work, and there are lots of people that are not willing to do it."

"We all come on the H-2A visa program, so we come all here legally by the season, just for the season, and then we go back to Mexico," Sol told ABC News. "We usually get a lot of applications. We're not getting that many now because people is afraid of that even when they are legally here, they're getting arrested for no reason."

The shelves are in arrears and what you see is usually last years harvest. If there’s a shortage we’ll see it next year. I’d make a list of the items they’re struggling to get or anticipate to be in limited supply. Stores aren’t the only option but knowing what’s missing helps you to prepare. I use an independent source for my dry goods and have produce too and sell everything in bulk up to 50 pounds.

Although the majority don’t preserve their food it’s worth it to start. There were several items missing from the shelves at Costco and packages are smaller too. Buying direct or with independent suppliers is usually more economical.
