  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Pope Leo says faith and love for migrants are connected

I have a bargain of sorts that I think may be a good compromise, we'll see who goes for it ;)

It involves replacing the paperwork and tests involved in the immigration and asylum processes.

It would be a simple 3 part form:
1) List 10 reasons why you think the country you're looking to get out of sucks.

2) List 10 ways the US is far superior to the country you're looking to get out of.

3) Denounce arranged marriages

That should pretty much cover it...

I'd put much more stock in someone giving good answers to those questions vs. being able to do 8th grade civics trivia.

Good answers to those questions = a fast track "Welcome aboard the American experiment, glad to have you"

"No Christian can regard the poor simply as a societal problem; they are part of our 'family,'" Leo writes. "They are "'one of us.'"

This is the part of the Christian ethos and fundamental command that MAGA cannot seem to hear.

Now how best to deal with “the poor”, the vulnerable, those seeking asylum and a life with hope, is a great challenge that requires collaboration and honest effort. Fixing broken social systems, immigration policy and procedures is a massive task. But it cannot even be started if the poor are not seen as one of us.
Forgetting any ethos or fundamental political command,

turn to Jesus. Listen for Jesus. Follow Jesus' Voice.

Careless use of terms can lead to callous dehumanizing rhetoric. We have seen so much of that even among so calked Christians that we grow in-sensitized and accept it as normal. It does matter “what you call them” and how we deal with them follows.
Replacing terms, even carefully, has led to dehumanizing society more and more.
Society is usually (and wrongly) "accepted" as (if) normal.

For probably thousands of years arranged marriages were much much better than what we see in the usa today or even for half a century or more.
I'm sure they were... for below-average guys who had parents with money.

Meanwhile, for the girls involved who are given the choice of "marry this stranger who's 15 years older then me so our families can consolidate wealth and maintain a certain class standing, else anger my parents and risk becoming a social outcast" (or worse), it's probably not a very good deal.

As God Directed , as God Directs, so let it be.

His Kingdom is near, and His Kingdom is Eternal.

The flesh/world is fleeting, temporary, and the suffering on earth is not even comparable to His Kingdom in the least.

"The Church, like a mother, accompanies those who are walking," Leo wrote in the document released by the Vatican on Thursday....

These are some of the thoughts of Saint Thomas Aquinas on the matter of immigration based on biblical principles. It is clear that immigration must have two things in mind: the first is the Nation’s Unity; and the second is the Common Good.

Immigration should have as its goal integration, not disintegration or segregation. The immigrant should not only desire to assume the benefits but the responsibilities of joining into the full fellowship of the nation. By becoming a citizen, a person becomes part of a broad family over the long term and not a shareholder in a joint stock company seeking only short-term self-interest.

Secondly, Saint Thomas teaches that immigration must have in mind the common good; it cannot destroy or overwhelm a nation.

This explains why so many Americans experience uneasiness caused by massive and disproportional immigration. Such policy artificially introduces a situation that destroys common points of unity and overwhelms the ability of a society to absorb new elements organically into a unified culture. The common good is no longer considered.

A proportional immigration has always been a healthy development in a society since it injects new life and qualities into a social body. But when it loses that proportion and undermines the purpose of the State, it threatens the well-being of the nation.

The well-being of the (any) nation is not at all important except when as part of great deception, to those who have planned to over-throw each country

Why? Do you believe someone is not trying to over-throw the country ? (actually the plans are centuries old)

Faith & love for migrants are connected. Faith & love for our own country and family are EVEN MORE connected.
We can't love others if we don't love ourselves.
If we intent on harming our own country or family, it's not faith or love.
