  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm finally having a discussion thread about Katharine Bushnell's book "God's Word to Women"! There's a lot in her book, so I'm only covering certain things.

This discussion will be about Eve. I will be posting which paragraph number certain points are made and links to Bushnell's book on the Internet Archive. Please also read Genesis 3 in your Bible. I will post the link to the NIV translation, but you are welcome to read whichever translation you'd like.

Here are certain things I learned from Bushnell's points about Eve:

  1. Eve was a "superior help" not an "inferior help" (Paragraph 34)

  2. When Eve told God that the Serpent deceived her, she was confessing what had happened and what she did, instead of putting the blame on someone else (Paragraphs 68, 69, 94)

  3. God put enmity between Eve and Satan as a result of Eve's confession; Eve's offspring is believers while Satan's offspring is unbelievers (Paragraphs 71, 72, 73)

  4. Eve means "mother of all the living [the believers]" instead of "mother of all human beings that have ever existed" (Paragraphs 83 and 97)

  5. Eve was not banished from the Garden of Eden, but Adam was (Paragraphs 95 and 96)

I would like to hear from you all what you thought of the five points I posted. Did you think of anything else when you read the paragraphs? How do the things that Bushnell discusses and points out in her book differ from what you have heard from others or in church?

Oh wow. That's such a different take on some of those things!

The idea of Eve as the mother of the living (believers) is really beautiful. Eve has always been positioned as the cause of our suffering, our downfall, our weakness. The idea that she might also be the foremother of our faithfulness, our hope, and our peace... that's actually made me tear up.

It all adds up after learning about this. I believe all the hate towards Eve and women is a successful and long time tactic from Satan to get people away from God and His Word.

When Eve told God that the Serpent deceived her, she was confessing what had happened and what she did, instead of putting the blame on someone else (Paragraphs 68, 69, 94)

Eve was not banished from the Garden of Eden, but Adam was (Paragraphs 95 and 96)

I wanted to elaborate on these two points I made.

In church, I was taught the opposite of these. That Eve was blaming someone else for her sins, just like Adam, instead of confessing to God. And that she was also banished from the Garden of Eden, just like Adam, even though the end of chapter 3 strictly mentions Adam (as "the man" and "he") instead of both.

It makes me wonder where the pastor that said these things got these false interpretations.

They're so mainstream, though. I mean, that's always the take on them that I've heard or read.

Interestingly, I just checked a commentary on Genesis that I have; at one point, the author is reflecting on the misleading teaching on this passage that he received as a young child.

He says, "with those pictures went an oral narrative that was very flawed. I will not blame the teacher or even the creators of the fine color pictures for the misconceptions I was taught. I will blame an oral tradition of teaching piety among Christian laity that has been perpetuated for generations. Maybe I will blame preachers for perpetuating those misunderstandings with their casual allusions in sermons. How can a theological tradition that proclaims sola scriptura so loudly and boldly then develop so many misconceptions of these stories and others in the Bible?

Do we read the stories too quickly and quote biblical passages rather than reading them, or is it just theological stubbornness that says, “I know what I believe, don’t bother me with the facts.” I have taught Old Testament for over thirty five years to encourage people to look closely at the text, especially if they are teachers, so as to avoid misconceptions."

Gnuse, Robert. Misunderstood Stories: Theological Commentary on Genesis 1–11 (p. 276).
