  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The latest endorsement continues a trend of major labor unions endorsing Republican candidates after supporting Democrats for years. A number of the nation’s largest unions, including United Auto Workers (UAW) and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, have praised the president’s tariff strategy.

The political climate is slowly changing.

Industry leaders know that kowtowing to the White House is a great way to “remain competitive”.

But what does that to do with Ramaswamy getting union endorsements?

It will take years to rebuild factories in the United States (and the fiasco in the Carolinas when temporary Korean workers at the Hyundai plant subsidiaries/support businesses who were shackled and taken away in chains has not helped any.)
When they are rebuilt robotics will rule, and will be run by a much smaller skeleton force of employees.
So, in a larger context, have Republicans ever supported unions? Aren't Republican states mostly right-to-work (for subsistence wages) states? Don't they fight unionization right and left?
I believe in unions and am disappointed that they think Ramaswamy might reverse decades of broken promises.

It is great that the GOP can get some union support. Hopefully they won't pressure to get rid of jobs in right to work states.

There is a great financial cost for saving jobs through tariffs. I say this based on research from the early 80s from the quotas that occurred on certain foriegn imports. The cost of saving a job through quotas is around 1 million per job at lest in today's dollars, with some suggesting far more. So if your position or union got a 1 million dollar subsidy per worker, you would be pretty greatful too. Below is from AI. I know those seem like high figures. The math is pretty sophisticated but it is economic analysis that is objective, completed well before Trump. We will see new studies fairly soon on Trump's tariffs. Some of the reason for the large amount per job is that if I limit Honda's through tariffs or quotas more people will shop for Ford's. Ford then will raise their prices because of the new demand. The demand curve shifts outward for those manufacturers with the most USA content and inward for those with the least USA content. This all takes time to push through, but the costs will move more to the consumer unless demand falls because tariffs will also force other industries to lay off workers. Of course some Japanese carmakers, produce some in the USA, exactly what companies benefit the most is analysis that is done by Wall Street. What little I have read is that Ford stands the most to gain though even they purchase some parts from overseas.

Besides tariffs creating higher prices and less available purchasing power a second reason for job losses is that at some point other nations reciprocate and raise their tariffs and quit buying USA stuff. Economists agree that tariffs too have a deadweight loss. This means an overall loss that neither the government or the nation will recieve. It is because free market competition is not being employed. Thus far, two courts have ruled that Trump exceeded his authority in the tariffs. The SC has fast-tracked the case so we will know in a month or so. The one court is the International Trade Court in DC a specialized court for trade cases. The 3 judge ruling was unanimous. with two GOP appointed judges and 1 democrat appointed judge. It was upheld on appeal. Could be that Trump will get off on some technicality. The appeals decision was 7 to 4, two of the dissenting judges were appointed by Obama. I think true conservatives do not like Presidential powers to tax outside of a bona fide emergency or foreign policy need.
  • Robert Crandall (Brookings Institution): A widely cited 1984 study by economist Robert Crandall found that the Japanese import quotas in 1981-1982 saved approximately 26,000 to 46,000 U.S. auto industry jobs. However, this came at a significant cost to consumers through higher vehicle prices. Crandall estimated the annual cost to consumers per job saved was $160,000.
  • Other economists: Other researchers conducted their own analyses of the VER. For example, a 1987 paper by Colleen E. Johnson in the Journal of Consumer Policy cited a study that estimated the cost per job saved in 1983 to be at least $1,444,267 (in 1983 dollars). Even less extreme estimates still placed the cost per job saved at several hundred thousand dollars, which would still be over $1 million today.
