There are those with whom one can have an interesting conversation even if there are different views. However, most people do not have a view t all. Of those that do, most have an emotional investment such that revealing differences risks offense. It makes those with whom one can actually have a conversation, even with differences, a special treasure.

One can float a test statement with someone to gauge how receptive they would be to discussion. There are many people who are so easily triggered and so hate filled that one has to tiptoe around them.

I have a friend that we both respect each others beliefs
I think just by being a light to him he'll see that

That's good to hear. It's easier to witness when both parties are respectful. It's not like that many times.

I actually lost a friend a long time ago because he did not want to respect my beliefs. He thought that I should change and go along with his sexually immoral lifestyle. We haven't spoken since.

I found this really hard. I always found people who believe different from you want you to live the life they do. B/c they believe different about the world, they act different, & they want the people they interact w/ to act different. Eventually, most likely quickly, you will have to choose between your beliefs & their's. & most likely you will choose their's.
Perhaps you will have more grace then I did
Or perhaps you have the gift of evangelism & can lead them to Christ quickly.

Agreed, or some people think you’re a fanatic for wanting to talk about the love of Christ.

"Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.” Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame." - 1 Corinthians 15:33-34

It's noble of you to respect their beliefs but the bible actually doesn't want us to draw close ties with people who aren't following our faith. It leads to a lot of problems or even your own spiritual death as you compromise your morals or beliefs just to please the friend and keep the friendship. We need to find like-minded friends within the Christian community and keep those who are not Christian, in a status that is only meant to share the gospel, help when needed, but nothing more than that.

Respect the person but not their beliefs.

Jesus warns us many times about the need to forsake even those we love in order to follow Him.

Paul mentions a few times about the evil of bad influence from unbelievers or those who believe differently.

God, in the Old Testament, warns Israel about falling into the ways of the Egyptians they fled and into the ways of the people in the area they fled to...
