  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How ought a Christian exercise political power in this world?

Some Christian are elected to high office or appointed to it. How should they exercise the power that they receive?
Everything we do as Christians is always done through love for one another. So, exercise power through love.

Through the glorification of Jesus Christ.

Laws should be passed which are in accordance to the words of Jesus Christ.

Laws which directly contravene the instructions of Jesus should not be supported by that individual.

It would be a difficult position for a true believer to be in government just as it is for believers to be in business. The ethics don't often align and being an outlier doesn't result in financial rewards or social favor by peers.

Christians are charged to be in the world not of the world. We can’t force anyone to conform to our beliefs or lord them over others. In respect to politics, we’re afforded the same voice one would receive as citizens of the nation. But we should not be ignorant of the devil’s devices or naively believe we’ll upset the status quo. Systems aren’t easily dismantled and the greater their strength the higher the likelihood you’re dealing with spiritual entities in place. Politics is a good example as is business to some degree.

Where the two differ is autonomy. The political machine relies on power and connections for success. You don’t have the liberty of doing what you wish and your actions must align with the party and individuals who’ve supported your election. Which typically includes corporate interests or well heeled persons. None of which they do without expecting comparable things in return. The statement about getting in bed with the devil holds a lot of truth in that arena. Profits over people is the norm.

While business affords the freedoms the other lacks and more navigation on the board. There’s numerous arms in commerce and it’s best to pursue the one that aligns with your gifts and aptitude. Ethics aren’t complicated in the early days if the founder has principles and works with that in mind. Scale is usually where you’ll see cracks in the surface and you can minimize its impact with a good mission statement and seasoned associates. You need wise people to discuss the hard things with and the who looks different for everyone.

Politicians derive the bulk of their means through connections not a salary. That’s why their net worth is demonstratively higher than what they receive from the government. Business owners aren’t hampered by the same and determine their compensation and tax policies are favorable. With the onset of the internet the latter looks different. You don’t need the same overhead you required for brick and mortar. You can run a lean organization and keep a larger share of profits. That’s why a lot of stores are closing and others are cropping up in this realm.

I think it’s helpful to have a philosophy about your resources and it isn’t fixed. Revisiting it periodically as things change is best as is working with professionals. As for giving, it may occur on a personal and/or corporate level and is best addressed in prayer with the Lord and related advisors.

While opinions abound, I feel it’s more important to prioritize examining ourselves and what the Lord‘s entrusted to us. It’s easy to imagine how others should conduct themselves but are with hitting the mark in our areas of influence? And turn the question on its head if you will. Could you be the Lord‘s politician? Is your life clean enough for elevation and scrutiny? What would they find when they poked around your backyard?

In a nutshell, that's the field of Caesar. Humans can make a living through serving Caesar. You serve both to the same extent though. God should be above all. Christians are the citizens of God's kingdom on earth (the one in the midst of us). Your citizenship to a country (belongs to a Caesar) is virtual.
