Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, ripped his colleague Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., on Wednesday for describing the idea that human rights come from God and not the government as "very, very troubling."

"I have to say, it is stunning to me that the principle that God has given us natural rights is now deemed by Democrats some radical and dangerous notion," Cruz said during a nominations hearing of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Kaine, who unsuccessfully ran as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's vice presidential candidate in 2016, had earlier described himself as "a devout person" before likening the concept of God-given rights to the Iranian regime.

How is it troubling? Isn't Kaine a practicing Catholic who would agree with that phrase? (as he claims per the article?)

Maybe I can understand from a secular point of view, but other than that, I don't know.

Kaine said:

"The notion that rights don't come from laws and don't come from the government, but come from the Creator — that's what the Iranian government believes," Kaine said. "It's a theocratic regime that bases its rule on Sharia law and targets Sunnis, Bahá'ís, Jews, Christians and other religious minorities."

"And they do it because they believe that they understand what natural rights are from their Creator. So the statement that our rights do not come from our laws or our governments is extremely troubling."

"I think the the motto over the Supreme Court is 'equal justice under law,' — the oath that you and I take pledged to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, not arbitrarily defined natural rights," Kaine continued.

That's quite an interesting statement. I don't think the belief that our rights come from God is Islamic in nature. Not at all.

He said: "I'm a strong believer in natural rights, but I have a feeling if we were to have a debate about natural rights in the room and put people around the table with different religious traditions, there would be some significant differences in the definitions of those natural rights."

What he was saying, inarticulately, is that in a free society that encourages religious freedom laws that protect the society come from government and not society, otherwise the laws are constructed to favor the dominant religions which and not necessarily all people.

Some religious traditions on natural rights are superior than others.

If Senator Kaine's belief about where our rights come from and if his beliefs about the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution are the norm in the Democratic Party, then that would not surprise me at all.
Especially when they start making up rights out of thin air. Like the right to have an abortion, or the right to trans their children.

I dont know. This may seem like an unpopular opinion, but I dont see anything that biblically supports the notion of God given rights other than to worship God.

Edit: I would like to clarify that there are numerous instructions on how we are to treat our fellow man, but nothing that explicitly say we have a right to anything. Otherwise, we would be right to demand those rights from God when we feel like they are being violated. So although many of what we consider to be "natural rights" are derived from biblical instruction, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness can be stripped away.

Yes, yes. And all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.

Yup. Neither one should have ever been confused rights! It only harms and destroys God’s creation!

How nice. In the context of law and rights, totally irrelevant, but nice.
