I would not characterize their response as appeasement. They didn't back down...and now, Trump is punishing them because.....reasons.

Canada has been talking tough talk and then bending the knee during this entire trade war. Meanwhile, China imposed ludicrous counter-tarriffs until a stalemate was reached.

That's how you deal with Trump. Strength and an unwillingness to back down in front of schmoozing or badgering.

First the first tax was questionably legal to begin with and set by the previous administration, as for electricity considering the other things being taxed and talk about isolating alaska, not doing 1 thing that hurts americans more then anything else is different. What canada has been doing is targeting the very people that voted trump into power.

While on other side canada is hurting many american buisnsses that rely on trade and tourism, reducing trade with the US on the stuff the US needs and some how thinks tariffing will improve the US. Where is the US going to get it's potash and steel and such, not from the US.

They still think they're winning, so it doesn't matter how much they are really losing. Any actual worsening of their situation is quickly ignored with statements like "it has to get worse before it gets better".

Will tariffs bring manufacturing and jobs back? Isn't most manufacturing now robotic?
It's possible.

But looking at the capricious nature of the tariffs jumping around from one number to the next each week, I find it hard to believe some exec is going to invest x-billion dollars in creating a new manufacturing plant in the US, solely to avoid the tariffs. If they had some other reason to build here, that might be an added bonus, but I don't see the tariffs alone driving that kind of decision.

they can't for a few reasons, TACO and even if trump keeps them for four years till democrats or a less insane repblican gets into power they will get overturned, then if all that works, thats 4-10+ years of higher prices waiting for products that are you say will be automated, or cost more.

I thought it was zero deals. The UK one literally says it's not a deal nor legally binding on the paper itself...
Trump quietly slaps hundreds of UK products with tariffs up to 25% – from shampoo to washing machines

The White House quietly imposed tariffs of up to 25 per cent on more than 400 new categories of goods that contain steel or aluminium.

British manufacturers have been blindsided in the move which will be “very damaging to British industry”.

It comes after the UK and US agreed a “breakthrough” trade deal in May.

But the completion of the deal is facing delays.

The President said the UK would be safe from future levies when pressed by The Sun following the signing. [That was a lie.]

China Pours Exports Into Africa Faster Than Anywhere Else

Africa has become a new hotspot for Chinese exports as Donald Trump’s tariffs redraw trade for the world’s biggest manufacturing nation.

China’s exports to Africa so far in 2025 are more than in the whole of 2020 and on track to exceed $200 billion for the first time.

The trade war has supercharged a boom that was years in the making, spearheaded by President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative unveiled in 2013. And as Chinese companies snapped up contracts to build everything from railways to industrial parks across the continent, the demand for the machinery and materials to complete these projects followed this year.

Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt are the biggest African buyers of Chinese products. Construction machinery was among China’s fastest growing exports to Africa in the first seven months, surging 63% year on year.

Rising protectionism in Washington has given extra incentive for Africa to buy from Beijing. A number of goods from more than 30 nations on the continent that had duty-free access to American markets granted under the African Growth and Opportunity Act are now being subjected to a range of tariffs by the Trump administration.

And in a counterpoint to Trump, Xi said in June that China is removing levies on imports from all African nations with which it has diplomatic ties.

Although most of the commodities imported from Africa to China are priced in dollars, the expanding trade footprint will probably help the yuan make inroads in corporate and government balance sheets.

Trump tariffs are increasingly forcing countries to pick sides between the US and China

It’s a theme that has been evident for months but has been on heightened display this week, with headlines from India to Mexico underscoring that nations are not necessarily destined to choose the US.

[India moves away from US (as above).]

On the other side of the spectrum this week is Mexico. America’s southern neighbor is eyeing new tariffs on China that could distance it from Asia.

It's a possible move that would deepen ties to the US ahead of high-stakes negotiations coming next year on renewing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

[If Mexico can curry some favor with Trump to get better treatment then, that would be a good move for them. But we can dispense with the idea that the tariffs are about other countries ripping us off; these are just bargaining chips for Trump to carry out his ham-fisted mercantile 'diplomacy'.]

They're ILLEGAL!

A US appeals court has ruled that most tariffs issued by US President Donald Trump are illegal, setting up a potential legal showdown that could upend his foreign policy agenda.
The ruling affects Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs, imposed on most countries around the world, as well as other tariffs slapped on China, Mexico and Canada.
In a 7-4 decision, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit rejected Trump's argument that the tariffs were permitted under an emergency economic powers act, calling them "invalid as contrary to law".
The ruling will not take effect until 14 October to give the administration time to ask the Supreme Court to take up the case.
Trump criticised the appeals court and its ruling on Truth Social, saying: "If allowed to stand, this Decision would literally destroy the United States of America."
"Today a Highly Partisan Appeals Court incorrectly said that our Tariffs should be removed, but they know the United States of America will win in the end," he wrote.
"If these Tariffs ever went away, it would be a total disaster for the Country. It would make us financially weak, and we have to be strong."
Trump had justified the tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which gives the president the power to act against "unusual and extraordinary" threats.
Trump has declared a national emergency on trade, arguing that a trade imbalance is harmful to US national security. But the court ruled that imposing tariffs is not within the president's mandate, and that setting levies is "a core Congressional power".

Trump's NPD means he can barely see the truth.
He has talked himself into this position on tariffs - and now thinks the world will genuinely fall apart if the tariffs end. As in - his world. His worldview here he is always the smartest guy in the room. It's part of his pathology - and he cannot be cured of it.

As we know - a heightened state of threat that talks up the danger - and presents himself as the only saviour for the situation - is a classic of both NPD and dictators.

Identification with the aggressor: Dictators are also especially good at targeting socially and economically vulnerable people – those who are not always very well educated or informed and, as such, often feel confused and insecure. Dictators exploit the rage and frustration of this population through the psychological process of “identification with the aggressor”. Many of the disempowered see in the “strong” man or woman both a reflection of themselves and the promise of a victory over their downtrodden state. They are caught in the allure of illusions and magical thinking. They become brainwashed.
The blame game: Whatever the societal wrong, dictators are adept at inciting blame and scapegoating. They play off the primitive defence mechanism of “splitting”, positioning issues in terms of in- and out-groups, magnifying external threats and fanning a collective paranoia. At the same time, dictators offer themselves as steadfast saviours. Buying into the simplistic, binary propositions, their followers align themselves with the “good fight” against evil and become intolerant of those they perceive as different.

SCO summit 2025 as it happened: China's Xi met Putin and Modi, as Trump's shadow loomed

  • Chinese President Xi Jinping hosts Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit
  • The summit saw Xi and Putin press their vision for a new global security and economic order that prioritises the "Global South", in a direct challenge to the United States.

The two-day event was attended by more than 20 leaders of non-Western countries, including India's Modi, who is visiting China for the first time in seven years.

Xi also called for the creation of a new SCO development bank, which would be a major step towards the bloc's long-held aspiration of developing an alternative payment system that circumvents the U.S. dollar.

He added Beijing will provide 2 billion yuan ($280 million) of free aid to member states this year and a further 10 billion yuan of loans to an SCO banking consortium.

Car rides and hand-holding: Putin, Modi and Xi send Trump a pointed message

The leaders of Russia, China and India met at a key regional summit in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin on Monday as they navigate tensions with the United States.

With a backseat bromance of their own, as well as hand-holding and hugs, the Russian leader, his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, and their host, Chinese leader Xi Jinping, put on a display Monday that seemed designed to turn heads in Washington.

India, long courted by the West as a crucial Asian partner and counterweight to China, has been rattled by Trump’s tariffs; the Kremlin has publicly brushed aside Washington's peace push in Ukraine; and Beijing continues to spar with the U.S. over trade, Taiwan and global influence.

India and China have long sparred over their Himalayan border, trade tensions and Beijing’s support for India’s rival, Pakistan.

But shared grievances — including Trump’s tariffs, which in China’s case have reached as high as 145% — have helped carve out common ground.

Weeks after Trump and Putin made headlines with a protocol-busting ride in “The Beast” at their Alaska summit, Modi joined the Russian leader for a drive in the back of Putin's own armored limo — a not-so-subtle statement of defiance just days after the U.S. doubled tariffs on India to 50% as punishment for buying Russian oil.

Indian television channel Republic World called it a “big diplomatic win” for India, while a headline on news channel Aaj Tak ran “Trump’s dictator vs. Modi-Putin’s friendship.”

[and now Putin, Xi and Kim are off to Beijing for a big military parade, celebrating the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Japan in WWII.]

Russia's Putin hails 'unprecedented' ties with China at talks in Beijing

Russian leader Vladimir Putin said his ties with Chinese President Xi Jinping are at an "unprecedented level" as the two met in Beijing on the eve of a massive military parade.

Xi is also preparing to welcome North Korea's Kim Jong Un in what appears to be a show of solidarity with both aggressors in the Ukraine war.

Xi will host China's largest-ever military parade on Wednesday to mark the 80th anniversary of the formal surrender of the Japanese at the end of World War Two.

SCO summit 2025 as it happened: China's Xi met Putin and Modi, as Trump's shadow loomed

More background and comment.

42 Percent Of The World Is Buying China’s Anti-U.S. Narrative

Most Americans have probably never heard of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. But 42 percent of the world’s population are members of this Anti-US club. As the organization meets in Tianjin this weekend, Xi and Putin are rehearsing an anti-U.S. narrative to divide the U.S. from important allies and partners. Xi and Putin used the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit to tell a coherent fiction:The U.S. and its allies are “militarizing” the Pacific, cyberspace, and outer space. China and Russia are positioning the organization to play a diplomatic and military role that will counter other international organizations that have been traditionally led by the U.S. The U.S. cannot afford to lose the hearts and minds of 42 percent of the world’s population–and must act to counter China and Russia’s dangerous information warfare and legal warfare.

The SCO was established in its current form in 2001, as a security cooperation organization. Its members are China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, Pakistan, Iran, and Belarus. Myanmar has recently expressed interest in joining the group. Turkey–a NATO ally–participated in the summit, along with a total of 20 foreign leaders and 10 heads of international organizations.

The U.S. cannot afford to ignore China-led initiatives like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. U.S. allies and partners are increasingly joining China-led organizations and initiatives. The U.S. must work to counter China’s false stories and to establish its own narrative of being a guarantor of security, freedom, and prosperity for all nations.

OK, but before all the freedom and security jazz, here's a 25% tariff on all your nation's products.

Interesting. With Ping's talk of creating their own bank, does that mean they're not only positioning themselves as rivals to NATO - but might also start to form a trade block?

Some more context is important here.

Jill Goldenstein is a law professor at the DoD-funded National Defense University and has been migrating towards a very strong anti-China position for the past five to six years. She's a compelling writer, and very knowledgable on these topics. However, I think that she has deliberately omitted some key and uncomfortable facts in this opinion piece in order to further her narrative.

These sentences for instance are telling in their omissions:

"China and Russia are positioning the organization to play a diplomatic and military role that will counter other international organizations that have been traditionally led by the U.S."
....
U.S. allies and partners are increasingly joining China-led organizations and initiatives.

What's being left unsaid is why this is happening. Yes, China is actively working to increase its influence. And it can be a malign influence (although not from its own perspective).

But the US does exactly the same thing, and is increasingly seen as a malign actor. The US is also actively pulling out of international partnerships and agreements. Further to this, the Trump administration's diplomatic, legal and economic stances are damaging its soft power relationships and undoing ~65 years of international consensus building.

America First is all well and good, but what's happening now is rapidly putting America last everywhere else.
