Here is a structured overview of the ten U.S. cities with the highest violent crime rates in 2025, along with the political affiliations of their state governors and city mayors:

Observations

  • Governors: 6 of these cities are in Republican-led states, despite many being urban Democratic strongholds.
  • Mayors: 9 of the 10 cities are led by Democratic mayors, with Detroit’s mayor having shifted to an independent stance.
  • Regional Trends: High-crime cities often reflect deep-rooted socioeconomic challenges, including poverty, housing instability, and under-resourced policing—not merely partisan governance.

Similar to the table I did for the least crime cities, I did the same for this batch. I asked ChatGPT for the population and median household income.

RankCityStatePopulation (latest est.)Median Household Income (2023$)
1MemphisTennessee629,063 (2023)$51,399
2DetroitMichigan645,705 (2024 est.)$38,080
3BaltimoreMaryland568,271 (2024 est.)$59,623
4Kansas CityMissouri508,233 (2023)$67,449
5MilwaukeeWisconsin~570,000 (2023)$51,888
6AlbuquerqueNew Mexico562,000 (2023)$65,604
7HoustonTexas2,314,157 (2023)$62,637
8Little RockArkansas202,739 (2023)$60,583
9ClevelandOhio365,379 (2024 est.)$39,187
10St. LouisMissouri281,754 (2023 est.)$55,279

These are all much larger cities with a much smaller household income than the low crime cities.
This supports the overall theory that large population + small income can = higher crime. It's likely certainly not the only factor, but its in there.

Wasn’t Detroit, Michigan under a Democrat mayor for a number of decades until recently?

I think a lot of it may be influenced by poverty or healthcare rather than political parties or lack of, in my opinion.

The current federal administration worries about blue states vs red one and blue cities vs red ones. It fuels the divisions and Makes America Divided Again (MADA).
