Technically setting something on fire can already be a crime. Like dropping a blanket on a public sidewalk and setting it on fire is probably illegal in most jurisdictions.
Usually, as long as you are burning your own property on your own property it does not spread to others' property and you are not doing it with fraudent intent (by for example burning it to claim insurance money) it it is not illegal.

I'm not going to support anyone's position that the UK (Great Britain is the island comprising England, Scotland and Wales) is a bastion of free speech. But to hold up the current US as a great example of it is, frankly, deluded.
How so?

So yelling “I love bacon” is enough to get someone arrested? If he was warned, then, maybe he deserved it. I dunno. Still, that sounds ridiculous to me. Hardly aggravating.
If you someone was intentionally walking around a Catholic enclave screaming "I love abortion!" in an attempt to rile people up and refusing to stop do you think that might be someone simply trying to create conflict?

Yelling "I love bacon" is not enough to get him arrested. He didn't stand in a street and yell "I love bacon!" and people came for him.

He was at a protest in a crowd that was getting riled up in a location where there had been riots by activists protesting on the side he's protesting on, and was yelling a litany of phrases designed to escalate the situation. He was warned (on camera) more than 14 times to knock it off, then finally he was arrested for what's basically religiously-driven incitement because he was trying to cause a problem.

If a group of rowdy people showed up to Christian unwed mother's group home and started yelling "I love crucifixion" and "I love abortions" especially after riots and skirmishes were already in the area, they'd be arrested too. You can't harass and intimidate or mock people who are on private property by the consent of the owners, even if you disagree with their religion or migrant status. This dude absolutely knew he was being problematic.

Thanks for the response. I obviously wasn’t aware of the whole situation…..

Yes. See previous post. As I said I wasn’t 100% aware.

I don’t think bacon and abortion are comparable BUT BUT BUT I can see why it’s completely problematic

I was misinformed and own up to that.

The UK doesn't identify freedom of speech as a legal fundamental right of citizens, so there is that. They've been doing this kind of thing for years.
What?

The UK does not have a First Amendment (or equivalent), and thus has no legal or constitutional issues with putting tighter limits on speech than we do here in the US.

I wasn’t aware of that. That sounds a bit odd.

The US is really the odd one out globally in this respect. The First Amendment is pretty unique.

That’s really interesting and very surprising, to be honest!

No they wouldn't. And it was not private property.

You can't get away from proving my point.

You know that black people also traditionally use the "okay" sign, right?

If it's suddenly not okay to use the okay symbol to black people, that proves my point.
I think it is amazing how liberal white women know more about racism than the black men in this thread.

Getting back on topic. I stand by my original statement about how Americans can be proud to know that they have better free speech that the UK. So wave Old Glory with pride. Don't burn it.

Some people may not be aware you’re African American (or if you prefer the term black, it’s up to you)

Just, BTW

That must be the case. Black is fine.

A lot of young descendants of American slavery seem not to know why we call ourselves "black." Most of them think it's because what white people called us "back in the day," and we just slavishly [sic] accepted it.

I guess it's our fault for not teaching them our history.

In fact, white people seldom used "black" to denote us. White people used "colored" or "negro" or a slur most of the time. Some academics used "black" in certain circumstances. But white people hardly ever "black" in normal discourse.

We chose to call ourselves "black" in the 1960s as an explicit antithesis to "white."

This was deliberate; we had meetings and rallies about it. To call ourselves "black" was a direct repudiation of "whiteness." "Black" was bold and blunt, "in your face."
