California voters widely prefer keeping the state’s independent redistricting commission, new polling shows, as Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) threatens to bypass it to counter GOP gerrymandering in other states.
A Politico-Citrin Center-Possibility Lab survey found 36 percent of California voters support returning congressional redistricting authority to the state Legislature, compared to 64 percent who back the independent redistricting commission.
I think that all reasonable people should vote the same way. But that's not the proposition that Newsom will be presenting.

After her prayer, Patrick admonished members of the public gallery who had remained seated: “... If you don’t stand for the invocation, I’ll have you removed. .... [Sitting] will not be tolerated.”

This reminds me of the first time I went to a football game and was asked to stand for a prayer. I sat down. Then I stood for the anthem. (It was about my 100th FB game and it was at a public university.)

What do you think Newsom will be presenting? To achieve the BEAUTIFUL MAPS referenced in the OP, California will have to vote to do away with the independent redistricting commission and return redistricting authority to the state legislature. That will likely be a tall order, since polling shows that almost 2/3 of Californians prefer the independent commission, which means that all of Newsom's tweets about redistricting are just bluster.

Gee, that's unusual. Asking the voters what they want. Do you think it will catch on?

You didn't answer my question (color me shocked).

You said, "But that's not the proposition that Newsom will be presenting." So what "proposition" do you think Newsom will be presenting?

'SACRAMENTO, California — California Democrats on Friday finalized their plan to snatch five GOP House seats next year by redrawing the state’s congressional lines, according to a copy of the new House map and other documents submitted to the Legislature on behalf of the DCCC.

The new lines, which voters would need to approve in a Nov. 4 special election...

That proposition.

Yes, that's exactly what I said. The proposition is that the independent redistricting commission would be abolished and that authority is returned to the state legislature so they could "snatch five GOP House seats". But as the poll I posted shows, nearly 2/3 of Californians don't support such an idea.

The voters don't approve the lines. They approve who draws those lines. Right now, it's an independent redistricting commission. To achieve what the California Democrats want to do, the people have to vote to do away with that commission (Newsom says temporarily, until 2030) and return the power to the Democrats. It will be interesting to see if voters are willing to undo the progress they've made and trust the Democrats in California with his plan.

The California Supreme Court on Wednesday also denied an emergency petition filed by Republican lawmakers that argued that Democrats violated the state Constitution by rushing the redistricting legislative package through the Legislature.

Obama [endorsed the plan and] called Newsom’s approach “responsible,” because the matter will ultimately be decided by voters, and if approved, would only go into effect if Texas or another state embarks on a mid-decade redistricting, and line-drawing would revert to the independent commission after the 2030 census.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS OBAMA ENDORSEMENT!

I see that the Democrats learned from the Republicans about what “trigger-laws“ can accomplish!

I just got my first bit of "vote no" campaign literature in the mail today. That was fast.
Was it a logical take-down or did they just use a celebrity/administration official with lotsa scare-words?

It's a bit too soon to get celebrities lined up when this thing must have been printed a week ago. It's bankrolled by a nepobaby Republican, who (to his credit) also strongly bankrolled the original proposition to create the independent commission. The mailer largely extols the genuine virtues of the original plan and deplores "turning back the clock on fair elections". To that extent it's fair, but it completely ignores the current context motivating the change.

Poll shows how Californians feel about Newsom’s redistricting fight with Trump

The UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll, conducted for the Los Angeles Times, asked registered voters about the Newsom-backed redistricting push favoring California Democrats, which serves as a counterattack to President Trump and Texas Republicans reworking election maps to their advantage.

When voters were asked whether they agree with California’s redistricting maneuver, 46% said it was a good idea, while 36% said it was a bad idea. Slightly more, 48%, said they would vote in favor of the temporary gerrymandering efforts if it appeared on the statewide special election ballot in November. Nearly a third said they would vote no, while 20% said they were undecided.

Among voters who regularly cast ballots in statewide elections, overall support for redistricting jumped to 55%, compared with 34% opposed.

[I assume the image shows how the question was framed, with the context regarding Texas and that the change is temporary.]
