One of the greatest Evangelical Preachers of our time was Dr. Billy Graham. Over 1,000,000,000 people reached with the Gospel of Jesus world wide, with hundreds of millions accepting the gift of Salvation

Remember Evangelicals are not a single denomination:

Here's a breakdown of some of the most prominent evangelical denominations:

Major Evangelical Denominations

DenominationKey Characteristics
BaptistEmphasizes believer’s baptism by immersion and congregational governance. Includes groups like the Southern Baptist Convention and American Baptist Churches USA.
PentecostalFocuses on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, such as speaking in tongues and healing. Includes Assemblies of God and Church of God (Cleveland, TN).
MethodistOriginated with John Wesley; emphasizes personal holiness and social justice. Includes United Methodist Church, Wesleyan Church, and Free Methodist Church.
Presbyterian (Evangelical branches)Governed by elders; emphasizes Reformed theology. Some branches, like the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, are considered evangelical.
Non-denominational Evangelical ChurchesIndependent churches that uphold evangelical beliefs without formal ties to a denomination. Examples include Life.Church and Elevation Church.
Charismatic MovementsFound within various denominations (even Catholic and Anglican), emphasizing spiritual gifts and personal experience with the Holy Spirit.

Evangelicalism isn't a single denomination—it's a movement that cuts across many traditions

The same is true with Charismatics:

Charismatic Christianity emphasizes the gifts of the Holy Spirit—like speaking in tongues, prophecy, and healing—and has influenced a wide range of denominations. Here's a breakdown of key groups associated with the Charismatic movement:

Charismatic Denominations & Movements

GroupDescription
Pentecostal ChurchesThese are foundational to the Charismatic tradition. Includes denominations like the Assemblies of God, Church of God (Cleveland, TN), and International Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Charismatic Movement within Mainline ChurchesEmerged in the 1960s–70s, bringing charismatic practices into historic denominations like the Episcopal Church, Lutheran Church, and Presbyterian Church.
Catholic Charismatic RenewalA movement within the Roman Catholic Church that embraces charismatic worship and spiritual gifts, especially since the late 1960s.
Neo-Charismatic ChurchesIndependent or non-denominational churches that embrace charismatic theology but aren’t formally Pentecostal. Examples include Vineyard Churches, Calvary Chapel, and Hillsong Church.
Third Wave MovementA more recent wave of charismatic influence, often found in churches like the Association of Vineyard Churches and other evangelical groups that emphasize signs and wonders without traditional Pentecostal structures.

Charismatic Christianity is more of a movement than a single denomination—it flows across many traditions and continues to evolve
Thanks for this post! Helps some of my questions!

I know there is even a Charismatic Episcopal Church that isn't in full communion with the worldwide Anglican Communion. The Charismatic Catholic renewal is still alive and strong. I think there are even Charismatic Presbyterians, Lutherans, Methodists that exist. It has influenced many different Christians of many different denominations.

If it's to ask, do you consider Pentecostal, Charismatic, and Word of Faith all related?
Charismatics encompass so many denominations (as you mentioned). As for Pentecostal/Word of Faith. The largest Pentecostal denomination is the Assemblies of God. The largest Word of Faith is Rhema with 314 schools, a global student body of 25,000

I am intimately aware of both. Their doctrinal stances are identical. The differences lie is in the emphasis on certain teachings.

They are not identical
  • AOG is a defined denomination with a broad set of beliefs, while WoF is a more specific teaching or movement.

  • While AOG emphasizes Pentecostal experiences, WoF focuses more on the power of faith and confession for physical and material blessings.

  • Not all AOG churches subscribe to all aspects of WoF teachings.

Essentially, all Assembly of God Christians are Pentecostal, but not all Pentecostal Christians are A of G.

I know there are many Pentecostal denominations that are historically African American, such as the Church of God in Christ.

I don’t know if they recognize being in communion with one another, since SOME Pentecostal denominations, such as the United Pentecostal Church, reject the Holy Trinity.

Is my understanding correct?

Oneness is an anomaly

For a lack of a better word, most Pentecostal Churches recognize each other with the exception of the Oneness Pentecostals?

Thanks for the response

They recognize other denominations also Baptist Catholic Lutheran Methodist. They’re not a branch all into themselves.

Remember, Pentecost list and evangelicals are the fastest growing denominations on the Earth.
