WASHINGTON, D.C. — Earlier this month, U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.) introduced the Redistricting Reform Act of 2024, legislation that would make a slew of impactful changes to the congressional redistricting process nationwide.

The bill would set spell out comprehensive criteria for congressional redistricting including:

Banning partisan gerrymandering by prohibiting drawing maps that favor or disfavor any political party,

Ensuring compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965,

Providing an explicit right for private citizens to file legal challenges under this law,

Requiring that districts be drawn to represent communities of interest and neighborhoods to the extent possible,

Barring people, legislatures and states from asserting legislative privilege over lawsuits brought under the act,

Setting clear deadlines for when maps must be enacted and

Mandating that redistricting plans are subject to public comment in an open and transparent manner.

Of coure Ds should play by the same going rules as Rs. But they often propose good rules, like that^, for all to follow, and the Rs blow it off.

Well you were complaining that theres basically nothing to see here because of "the drama". Sounds like youre unaware there's an important issue on the table.

Personally I'd like to see Americans of all parties press their politicians to end partisan gerrymandering altogether.

Right. The Ds don't want gerrymandering, but they'll happily gerrymander if the Rs gerrymander.

California is ready to toss out everything they've done to eliminate gerrymandering and return to gerrymandered districts that will benefit the Ds. But they really don't want to, you see. They have to. At least, that's what Ds want me to believe.

Meanwhile, it's pretty obvious to any objective person that both parties are more than happy to do whatever it takes for them to retain power, no matter what they say. We all know action speak louder than words.

The Democrats do not like the Republicans redistricting a state - so to show how wrong the Republicans are - they are going to redistrict a state.
The Democrats do not like the President name calling - so to show how wrong the Republicans are - they name call.
The Democrats do not like a state that their party is under represented in the house- but ignore five States where there is little or no Republican seats. New Mexico - 44% Republican - 0 seats. But that's ok.

Newsom gave Trump fair warning. I voted for the amendment to create the independent commission. I applied to be on the independent commission. If Texas is still proceeding with its plan in November, I will vote to support the California amendment.

You were just now faintly praising California for putting up independent guardrails on the districting process. We stepped away from 'whatever it takes' politics. But when cheaters start rigging the game, and if they are not stopped by the courts, We The People of California will have the option to vote to counter these moves.

We're saying the same thing. You and I are both acknowledging what's happening. But it seems Ds want it both ways. They want to be seen as the noble ones who want to abide by the rules, but they're more than willing to toss those rules, that they allegedly hold dear, in the trash when they deem necessary.

I don't have loyalties to either party, and I certainly don't support what they're doing in Texas either. But at least the Rs are up-front about their less-than-honorable intentions while the Ds are trying to pretend like they care one whit about the rules while simultaneously taking actions to disregard them.

Partisan gerrymandering has been going on since the beginning of our nation. Whoever is in power at every census wants to change it to their advantage. So nothing new here.

Except typically Ds propose ending partisan gerrymandering for all. Rs reject it.

But while its the law of the land, of course D's need to take advantage of it just like Rs do. Play by the same rules. But try to change them when needed. Like now.

Another thing to keep in mind for the recent context is that SCOTUS ruled in 2019 that while partisan gerrymandering may be "incompatible with democratic principles", the federal courts cannot review such allegations

Thus leaving the matter entirely in the hands of the state legislatures.

This was reinforced in 2024 in Alexander v. South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, where gerrymanderers are given the benefit of the doubt if maps look like racial gerrymandering (still illegal) when they assert they were merely partisan gerrymandering (now legal, or at least, not justiciable).

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Friday called a second special session to push through a redrawing of congressional maps to secure up to five more Republican seats in the US House.

The Democrats laid out two conditions for returning: the first special session ending and California introducing its new congressional map to offset GOP gains in Texas by producing up to five new US House seats for Democrats.

The California legislature is set to convene on Monday to begin the legislative process around their proposed map.
