Perhaps they should book him a room at the laughing academy.
Maybe, but if you tried to lock up everybody who enjoyed poking fun at your guy there wouldn't be enough room.

If your opponent won't fight by Marquis of Queensberry rules, you don't have to either.
When I was young and rather stupid I got into a bit of a drunken push and shove situation. Now I'd do anything to avoid getting into a fight but it looked like it was going to go off and I was going to get a beating. So I told the guy in no uncertain terms that this was not going to be Marquis of Queensberry rules and gave him some details of what I was prepared to do to him (not that I'd get the chance). Luckily he believed me and had second thoughts so I lived to (avoid another) fight another day.

If you can actually see that the other guy is not 'playing by the rules' then all bets are off and anything goes. If he starts swinging a broken bottle at you then taking up a boxing stance is not going to get you anywhere, except a trip to the hospital.

The gloves have come off. If MAGA wants to play dirty then them bleating about the Dems being hypocrites because they've been complaining about the GOP tactics is laughable. If the guy is beating you with a pool cue then it's a bit rich for him to complain when you kick him in the cojones.

“When they go low, we go high

I'm sorry, Michelle. But not any more. Too many lines have been crossed.

This seems to be a tacit admission that neither side is even pretending to care about the rules or democracy any more. I guess it's good that the facade has been shattered.

The risk here is that CA voters don’t go for it and he looks silly.

Newsom vs. The Terminator!

Newsom’s move has drawn criticism from some notable figures — perhaps no one more so than former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R), who has threatened to campaign against the plan, according to Politico.
“He calls gerrymandering evil, and he means that. He thinks it’s truly evil for politicians to take power from people,” Schwarzenegger spokesperson Daniel Ketchell said. “He’s opposed to what Texas is doing, and he’s opposed to the idea that California would race to the bottom to do the same thing.”

How is it at all possible that you completely missed the point of that post? I even gave a little anecdote to fill it out so that you'd not be confused about what I was saying. And to complain about either side not caring about rules or democracy had me cleaning cereal off my laptop these last few minutes. I mean, that was meant as a joke, wasn't it?

Don't you even dare think to complain that you might eventually reap that which you have sown. You've been waving a club studded with nails about these last few months and you now have the temerity to say 'Hey, that's not fair. He just swung a punch at me'.

Came as a bit of a shock to you, did it? That says a lot.

I didn't. Clearly, you no longer agree that when they go low, you go high. Ergo, everyone's going low. Whee!

And to complain about either side not caring about rules or democracy had me cleaning cereal off my laptop these last few minutes. I mean, that was meant as a joke, wasn't it?

Nope. It's pretty obvious that's what's going on here.

Don't you even dare think to complain that you might eventually reap that which you have sown.

Please spare me the histrionics. I haven't "sown" anything.

You've been waving a club studded with nails about these last few months and you now have the temerity to say 'Hey, that's not fair. He just swung a punch at me'.

Hyperbole much? I don't even know what you're referring to.

Came as a bit of a shock to you, did it? That says a lot.

Not at all. I've known that the Democrats indignant rants about taking the high road were rank cow manure all along. It's just good to see people admitting it openly now.

It's time to take the gloves off.

You know when the ref says 'Break when I tell you, no hitting below the belt, no hitting after the bell and no gouging'? Well, the Dems have been doing their best to play fair, doing their best to apply the rules. And Trump and his cronies are completely ignoring the rules. They and their supporters having been sowing discord, ignoring the constitution, ignoring the judiciary, ignoring congress, ignoring the separation of powers and lying through their teeth.

And please, do not give me any bulldust about the Dems doing the same. It's par for the course for any politician or any political party to see how far some rules can be bent. It's why we have the judiciary in the first place. But the GOP is not bending rules. They are blatantly ignoring them.

Really, how long did you think people were just going to complain about it and do nothing. You want to play hard ball? Well, the game's on.

Or IOW, It's time for Democrats to "go low".

And please, do not give me any bulldust about the Dems doing the same.

You just told me they're going to do the same. Isn't that what you mean by "it's time to take the gloves off"?

Really, how long did you think people were just going to complain about it and do nothing. You want to play hard ball? Well, the game's on.

Right. No one's going to follow the rules.

I don’t understand why everyone is in an uproar about this. Both plans will be tight up in court for a long time.
The current law (stupidly) favors strictly partisan gerrymandering.

Is there some better time than when the legislation is being made to be upset - if the concept upsets you?

Complain away at your discretion. It does make for political drama entertainment.

That sounds like an argument against complaining about things online generally: that its basically useless except as fun.

Thats pretty reasonable. But still, abstaining from political critique is not my approach, obviously. Is it yours?

“Donald Trump, you have poked the bear and we will punch back,” Newsom, who is seen as a possible 2028 presidential contender, said at a news conference with other Democrats.

Newsom will ask legislators to call a special election for November, where voters would ratify the plan to use new maps. Currently, California uses an independent commission to draw district lines (which was also passed by voters).

Unlike in Texas....where Republican legislatures decide on maps in closed rooms....to find "5 more seats" because their feckless Governor can't stand up for what is right in Texas.

Absolutely they should use the same political tactics that Rs take advantage of.

Right.

Democrats are opposed to gerrymandering, so I've heard. But not really.

FTR, this kind of rank hypocrisy plays horribly with independents. It confirms what we already knew; both parties will do whatever it takes to stay in power. The illusion that anyone cares about fair and honest elections has been completely shattered.

As Ah-nold put it, it's a race to the bottom.

Did the GOP support this bill? If not, why?

February 22, 2024
  • WASHINGTON, D.C. — Earlier this month, U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.) introduced the Redistricting Reform Act of 2024, legislation that would make a slew of impactful changes to the congressional redistricting process nationwide.
The bill would set spell out comprehensive criteria for congressional redistricting including:
  • Banning partisan gerrymandering by prohibiting drawing maps that favor or disfavor any political party,
  • Ensuring compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965,
  • Providing an explicit right for private citizens to file legal challenges under this law,
  • Requiring that districts be drawn to represent communities of interest and neighborhoods to the extent possible,
  • Barring people, legislatures and states from asserting legislative privilege over lawsuits brought under the act,
  • Setting clear deadlines for when maps must be enacted and
  • Mandating that redistricting plans are subject to public comment in an open and transparent manner.

Not usually. I find some issues more interesting than others. This one could get interesting if it actually happens.

In Texas, for example, the democrats that left demanded that they would return if Abbott doesn’t call another session. It’s pure drama here. lol
