‘Look At That!’: CNN Reporter Amazed Food, Gas Prices Tame Under Trump

“A tamer inflation report, despite President Trump’s tariffs. This is better than expected. Month over month, as you mentioned, up 0.2%. On an annual basis, up 2.7% in July,” Yurkevich said. “That’s also what we saw on an annual basis for the month of June. When you look at the key categories that we always look at — energy, food and shelter — energy fell by 1.1%. That was largely driven because of gas prices falling in the month of July by 2.2%.”

“Look at that food! I mean, this is where people spend their money, right? Food, every single day. Food flat, 0%, and actually down at the grocery store by 0.1%,” she continued. “And then shelter. We always usually see an increase because that is what people are paying on rent. And we know that rents are rising. That is usually the biggest share of this report.”

Really? Where?

We travel 120 miles to pick up 90-day prescriptions and 3 months of most grocery items. I have complete records for each item bought since the beginning of the year. In just the last 3 months, most of the items we buy have gone up in price. Coffee alone has increased from 48.9 cents per ounce to 58.5 cents per ounce. So that's right at 10-cent increase if rounded. That's a whopping $3.20 on a 32 oz. Container.
Diet Coke, up $3.00 on a 24-count case. Bread, canned and frozen vegetables, etc., etc, almost everything increased by a few cents or dollars.
Most of our perishables we buy locally.

Food prices were unchanged from June to July but remained 2.9% higher than a year ago, above the Federal Reserve’s target inflation rate of 2%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ consumer price index report released Wednesday.

Or maybe the commentator was amazed because the evidence he/she has experienced IRL does not match the statistics.

Now that non-partisan directors are getting fired, hopefully consumers will have enough common sense to realize when the statistics have been manipulated.

What makes it tamer? That's the same as June. The 'core' inflation rate increased from 2.9% to 3.1%.

Yeah, gas prices do tend to dip when people are worried about the economy.
