California Gov. Gavin Newsom has vowed to “fight fire with fire” in response to moves in Texas to redraw the electoral map to favor Republicans.

Newsom was speaking as Greg Abbott, his Lone Star State counterpart, ordered the arrest of the 51 state Democratic lawmakers who have left Texas to prevent its House of Representatives voting through the redistricting proposals advantageous to the GOP by denying it a quorum.

While I don't like what the end result would be if this sort of tit-for-tat battle went on indefinitely with regards to redistricting... I respect his Moxie on this one.

It sounds like what Cali is thinking of doing is cancelling out any unfair advantage Texas is trying to create, and Newsom mentioned there is a sunset on the proposed provision and things would revert back to the independent redistricting model in 2030.

I've mentioned before that Democrats need to learn the art of counter-punching, as that seems to resonate well with voters. Bravo Newsom.

Hopefully the DNC is taking notice, an independent voter like myself is available to a Gavin Newsom if he stays on the trajectory he's been on lately (moderating his positions on some of the social issues, and counter-punching against nonsense)

It's not pretty, but what's going on in Texas is equally blatant.

Demographics aren't in favor of Republicans' donors interests (note my emphasis, the donors, they are the ones really calling the shots), even with their recent electoral victories they have secured. Once the Baby Boomer generation kicks the bucket, things are going to look very different politically, with old alliances not being so dependable (younger generations social conservativism is more of a mood than a coherent ideology, and not as tied to institutional loyalty). Which is why I suspect Republicans are engaged in a desperate effort to lock down solid federal Congressional seats in places like Texas, where they dominate the state legislature. It's a last desperate effort to hold on a little while longer.
