There are some people, some who preach the Scriptures, who believe that the only way that we can hear from God is through the written word of God in the 66 books of the Bible (Genesis to Revelation). And so if you were to say, “God said to me,” or “God showed me,” or “God led me to,” they would say that you are not hearing from God because what you said you heard from God was not a direct quote from the Scriptures. But is it true that none of us can hear God speak to our hearts apart from the written word?
In the following Scriptures we will learn that God does speak to us through his Spirit in words which may not be direct quotes from the Scriptures, but which align with the Scriptures and which do not contradict the Scriptures. For, as followers of Jesus Christ we are to be those who are being filled with the Holy Spirit, who are being led by the Spirit, who are living by the Spirit, and who are walking by the Spirit. And we are not to be resisting the Holy Spirit nor quenching the Spirit nor putting out the Spirit’s fire.
And I am going to interject this here. If I believed that I could not hear God’s voice apart from the written word of God, I would have refused the call of God on my life 21 years ago. I would not have written and posted on the internet what he was teaching me each day from the Scriptures. I would not have written the songs he put in my mind to write nor the poems he put in my mind to write nor would I have recorded the video devotionals he directed me to record, nor would I have written the Christian memes, either.
For all of that has been directed and inspired by the Holy Spirit living within me who shows me each day what Scriptures to read and to talk about, and who directs me in what to say, as he is doing right now. And this is not a bragging point, because all this comes from God, not from me. But if I refused the voice of the Spirit, God would not have used me to share his gospel daily with people in nations all over the world, via the internet. I would not be here, for this is not something I thought up of my own accord.
In summary, what the following Scriptures teach is that the Holy Spirit will give us words to speak, and he will teach us what to say. The Spirit will reveal things to us that are for us personally. And he will teach us all things, and he will guide us into all truth, and he will speak to us, and we will be able to hear him speak to us in our spirits. And some of us will prophesy, and see visions, and dream dreams from God kind of like the parables that Jesus used to tell, to illustrate biblical truth and to teach its lessons.
But in all of this, God must get the glory.
