The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission has waded into the politicized debate over NPR and PBS, ordering up an investigation that he said could be relevant in lawmakers’ decision about whether to continue funding the public news organizations.

Brendan Carr, the chairman, said in a letterto NPR and PBS on Wednesday that the inquiry would focus on whether the news organizations’ member stations violated government rules by recognizing financial sponsors on the air.

Cough edit title cough.

Hahahaha, “full-disclosure” is now suspect.

New FCC Chair Revives Complaints About ABC, CBS And NBC Content That His Predecessor Rejected As “At Odds With The First Amendment”

The complaints include one against ABC’s Philadelphia affiliate, WPVI-TV, alleging bias in ABC’s hosting of the September presidential debate; one against WCBS-TV in New York that accuses CBS of “news distortion” in the way that 60 Minutes edited an interview with Kamala Harris; and another against WNBC-TV in New York for alleged violations of the equal time rule when Saturday Night Live featured Harris in a cameo the weekend before the presidential election.

Looks an awful lot like the administration objecting to the specifics of the content and taking action because of it. Good thing Democrats aren't doing it or it would be government censorship.

Interesting weaponized wrinkle on that. See if you can spot the difference.

Late last year, the Democratic former FCC chairwoman threw out complaints filed against CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox.

But Trump’s pick to lead the agency, Brendan Carr, quickly revived the CBS, NBC and ABC complaints.

CBS hits back at FCC over probe into ‘60 Minutes’ edits

CBS has asked the Federal Communications Commission to end its investigation into edits of its “60 Minutes” Kamala Harris interview, arguing that the federal government risks becoming “a roving censor” trampling on free speech rights.

The FCC, until recently, has typically taken a hands-off approach to complaints about editorial decisions, and court cases have set a high bar for such claims. The FCC has said it would “only investigate claims that include evidence showing that the broadcast news report was deliberately intended to mislead viewers.”

“The complaint filed against CBS for ‘news distortion’ envisions a less free world in which the federal government becomes a roving censor — one that second guesses and even punishes specific editorial decisions that are an essential part of producing news programming,” the Paramount Global-owned network argued Monday in its response to the FCC inquiry.

Video of the unedited interview, released last month by the FCC and separately by CBS, confirmed the network’s account.

News organizations routinely edit interviews, removing extraneous words and redundant phrases.

FCC Chair Faces Ethics Complaint Over ‘Egregious Misconduct’

The Freedom of the Press Foundation has filed a formal complaint with the DC Court of Appeals, alleging Carr violated legal ethics by using the agency as a tool for partisan enforcement.

The July 28 complaint urges the court’s Office of Disciplinary Counsel to investigate what the group calls a “pattern of egregious misconduct,” including Carr’s decision to revive dormant “news distortion” cases against CBS, NBC, and ABC, as well as his role in pressuring companies over Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts and media mergers.
