Kids who had class from 8-3 every day, and then homework and maybe some sort of sports or other extra-curricular? How's that supposed to work?

The reality is that, for regular fast food joints, high schoolers have never been in a position to do anything more than augment the adult staff. The only places run predominantly by high schoolers are seasonal shops only open during the summer. A quick glance around any fast food place ought to quickly dash this fantasy of yours.

It was in the several years that I worked fast food. With the exception of managers, most of the crew were teenagers.

My point was that automated tools in the kitchen, ordering kiosks and other items like that can help the reduced staff reach the required levels of productivity without overtaxing them.

Ordering kiosks only cover the front counter cashier position for non cash paying customers. They don't cover the drive thru position and they don't cover the food handling positions. The food handling process is extremely complex. And I found the drive thru position more difficult than the food handling position.

Isn't it dastardly that business' put profits over people? Capitalism has a long road to go before it changes its ways. And let's not forget these jobs are summer jobs that are not meant for people to rely on for making a living. Consumers will get a better paid, higher quality staff member to serve them (and they won't have to rely on tips so it's a win for the customer as well).
