I honestly feel like he knew his time was near. They really pushed this final show and I think behind the scenes more was going on with his health than we were told. Glad he got to have his final stand with his old band mates. Ozzy was one of the soundtracks to my youth. Music was an escape from the awkward teenage years of bullying and hormones and Ozzy was definitely in rotation for me then. Rest in power.

He himself said at the last gig that he wasn't going to be around for much longer. Literally hung on to be able to get the farewell done.

While I don't believe in a heaven... if there is a "metal heaven", it'd be nice to think he's chilling with Randy Rhodes up there.

Although, I think Jake E Lee was the best guitarist he ever had (Randy Rhodes and Zakk Wylde peeps would get hostile with me for saying that lol)

The first time I read this, I missed that you said “peeps” and thought idk… what I’ve seen of Wylde (which isn’t much I’ll admit) seems fairly humble and respectful of other guitar players who came before him.

After the Ozzy show, I saw a video of Nuno talking about how hard Bark at the Moon is to play and how he was worried about upstaging Jake E Lee. It’s kind if nice to see this shift from where things were in the 80’s and 90’s with everybody preening and trying to undermine each other.

I kept rewinding it to that opening guitar lick for Bark at the Moon. I was mesmerized and in a world of my own.

The one time I stayed to the end of ozzfest, most years I was too sunburnt and concussed after a morning to afternoon session at the second stage to hold on for the headliners, they timed ozzys set perfectly. A full moon was rising over the stage as they played bark at the moon aand it was glorious.

in most Heavy Metal music's case a lot of it is just theatrics (even the infamous bat was a rubber prop), so good to see that people can separate art from artist.

A possible misconception about Black Sabbath and Ozzy is that they promoted evil. There are definitely songs that speak about evil, but they are often more like commentary. When preachers railed against Ozzy in the 80s it showed their ignorance, and when Ozzy replied that he was a Christian, he was being sincere. Some of his (Sabbath's) music had explicitly Christian lyrics, e.g., After Forever, which is a positive take on faith in Christ. That's not to say Sabbath or Ozzy were "Christian" bands, lol, but they weren't pure evil, either.

I saw Sabbath in DC for their last tour and was so pumped that they played it.

That was my experience, too. I pretty much had headphones on all the time, if I could get away with it. The Walkman was like a gift from God for introverts.

RIP.

I use to listen to his music and Led Zeppelin a lot in the late 2000s to early 2010s. Some of my favourite Ozzy/Sabbath songs are Iron Man, Paranoid, A National Acrobat, War Pigs, The Wizard, Bark at the Moon, You’re No Different, So Tired and Crazy Train.

He sure was. But Rhodes has an extra level of compositional awareness and ability. You know he double tracked all his solos?

Plus he had this touch that I think comes from his classical (rather than blues) background, where every note duration feels really precise, making all these fast complex difficult parts feel measured and unrushed and unslurred. You'd think that would diminish the thrill of it, but I get the opposite sensation.

What you say is true, but they did play up the evil aspect in the early days. Blue Oyster Cult was sort of intended to be the American Black Sabbath. Now those guys were pure evil, lol. (I don't mean them, but their music.
