Virginia's ban on sexual orientation change efforts talk therapy for LGBT-identified minors, referred to by critics as "gay conversion therapy," has been effectively struck down following a legal challenge by two Christian counselors.

John and Janet Raymond, along with the Virginia Department of Health Professions, agreed to a consent decreelast month in the Circuit Court of Henrico County, which was recently made public.

The measure, HB 386, bars licensed professionals from trying to change a minor's sexual orientation or gender identity and regards such counseling as unprofessional conduct and grounds for disciplinary action.

In my experience, most minors enter therapy because someone else thinks they need it, not because they think they do. And, therein lies the problem where gay conversion "therapy" becomes coercive. Never mind that its efficacy is not support by data or that most professional organizations consider it unethical practice.

You just claimed that all minors in therapy are being coerced, not just gay minors. On that reasoning we should not allow any minors to receive therapy, because it is coercive.

No, I stated most minors are in therapy because someone else thought they needed to be. At some point they have to acquire some buy it that maybe it can help them. If they never get there, one is only trying to coerce them into someone else's hope for them.

Same point. "On that reasoning we should not allow most minors to receive therapy, because it is coercive."

I don’t support conversion therapy, and that’s coming from a devout Christian. Sexual orientation is not something someone can willfully change.

I agree. Especially since it’s been accepted sexual orientation cannot be changed.

Why is it that when someone who was homosexual becomes heterosexual, everyone says that change is impossible; but when someone who was heterosexual becomes homosexual, no one bats an eye?

I dunno. Some people’s sexuality is fluid.

But on a serious note: why do christians think that sexual desires cant be changed?
I don't think that it was Christians who came to that conclusion

I don't think the issue is as you stated, as sexuality isn't typically seen in such a binary fashion. The issue is that it is often presented in a false dichotomy of either being a choice, or being inborn in some fashion. The reality is that sexual attraction is complex and isn't really subject to conscious decision one way or the other, but that doesn't mean it can't change. When it comes to the therapy question, typically those who view sexual desire conversion therapy negatively do so because it appears to be largely ineffective and is associated with other psychologically harmful complexes that become exacerbated when the therapy fails to deliver on its promises. That is, of course, not considering the additional moral differences between secular therapists and Christian belief that contribute to the negative views on such therapy.

I mean? It's not just Christians. It is what it is. Some sexual behavior is sinful, attractions themself, are not.

Are you aware of charts such as this, which Bill Maher recently joked about?
