A housing policy document on Mamdani's official website includes a pledge to "shift the tax burden from homeowners in the outer boroughs to more expensive homes in richer and whiter neighborhoods."

Not smart. Youre supposed to say it so everyone knows what you mean without saying the actual words.

Saying the quiet part out loud has worked for the republicans…

Seems like them tossing the "whiter" part in was an unnecessary risk with no upside.

I guess I'm not sure why "transferring the tax burden from the outer boroughs to the richer neighborhoods" wouldn't have worked to get the message across.

Even if "tax whitey more" was the underlying intent, you'd think some political strategists would've/should've caught that and expressed the virtues of being subtle and using subtext.

Mamdani isn't trying to appeal to the same type of voters...

...and apparently he didn't learn much from other major cities.

There is such a thing "too left" even for heavily left-leaning cities. (See: San Fran/London Breed)

In either case, I bet upon hearing the news that this guy is favored to win, Florida real estate agents just fired up their money counting machines and started playing "Push it to the limit" on their stereos

I'm not sure why it is any of our business--unless we actually live in New York. It seems to me that voters in New York are entitled to any Mayor they want to elect.

I never said they couldn't pick they mayor they wanted, I'm a firm believer in the saying "In a democracy, voters decide what they get, and deserve to get it good and hard"

However,
It's a discussion forum for current events.

A) I recall a lot of people who didn't live in Florida, having some serious opinions about stories involving Ron DeSantis, and wanting to discuss them, yes?

B) Politics in major US jurisdictions don't exist in a vacuum. Especially places like NYC, which is the seat of the country's finance and banking sectors.

C) Even in major cities that aren't "sector seats", surrounding areas experience impacts as a result of the major city's policies.

Of course, and we all had opinions. It's natural human failing to want to stick our noses into other people's business.

Of course but at this point none of us can tell what those impacts will be.

If Zohran and AOC had a baby, it would be end times for sure.

...It's vitally important that we keep them away from one another.

Some of the impacts are predictable.

NYC in particular has had instances of "tax flight" in the past.

Saying the quiet part out loud has worked for the republicans…
And yet it's Republicans who are the ones always accused of "dog whistle".
Rather ironic, that.

How is this a "dog whistle"? Its the opposite. Hes flat out saying it.
I didn't say this (mayoral candidates statement) was dog whistle. I was replying to someone else's assertion that Republicans are the ones who say the quiet part out loud and that it's worked for them. And yet, Republicans are actually the ones routinely accused of using "dog whistle", which as you correctly point out, is the opposite of what this Democrat in NY is doing.

It seems that the extremists on the dem side are getting rather arrogant in that they believe they can alienate so many of the voters, and then get very far. Telling billionaires that they shouldn't exist, and using race as a method to determine who should pay more taxes probably won't go over so well in New York--a city where there are plenty of people who are white, and are rich. It is basically the financial capital of the country.

Whats funny is that most of them will vote for him. Then some of them will pach up and leave after he really puts into place things that actually affect them.
