The man with the world’s highest IQ has proclaimed that “Jesus Christ is God,” building on his previous contention that belief in the afterlife is consistent with science.

YoungHoon Kim, who identifies himself on his X profile as “the World’s Highest IQ Record Holder” and lists his intelligence quotient as 276, proclaimed his Christian faith in a statement posted to X on Tuesday. “As the world’s highest IQ record holder, I believe that Jesus Christ is God, the way and the truth and the life,” he wrote.

In replies to posts reacting favorably to his embrace of Christianity, Kim vowed to “use this opportunity to lead many souls to God and declared, “Christ is my logic.” In a March 18 post, Kim wrote, “One of the best things I have ever done in my life is earning a BA degree in Christian Theology (nondenominational) from Yonsei University, # 1 private university in Asia.” He referred to theology as “the ultimate discipline of all fields of study.”

This should immediately disqualify him from being taken seriously. It would mean, using a generous standard deviation of 16 for his measure of IQ, that he's in the 99.99999999999999999999999998th percentile (that's 27 nines) of the population, with a total human population throughout all of history on the order of 100 billion (leaving aside the YEC/OEC debate - this is the most generous estimate for his case).

A quick search gave an estimate of 117 billion on the upper end. The single smartest man out of those 117 billion would be smarter than 99.999999999991% of the total population - that's 11 nines. Adding more nines is meaningless (and actually wrong) because there aren't any more people to give you finer precision in the percentage. But this guy is claiming almost 3 times that precision, in terms of order of magnitude, for himself.

As a side note, I noticed the article has been taken down. Maybe Christian Post realized how silly this all was?

This is good news! And it is not just the one post he made. He has now made several posts about Christianity. He is using his IQ as a witness to Christ, and in that, I rejoice.

YoungHoon Kim is a South Korean intellectual and scientist who has garnered significant attention for his exceptionally high claimed IQ. He is recognized by several organizations, including the Official World Record®, World Memory Championships, and World Memory Sports Council (which is in partnership with Guinness World Records), as holding the world's highest IQ, reportedly 276.
Here are some key aspects of YoungHoon Kim's profile:

  • IQ and Recognition: He is widely regarded as the "world's smartest man" and has achieved an IQ score of 276, which is claimed to be the highest ever recorded. His intelligence has been verified by various high-IQ societies like the GIGA Society (1/billion), Mega Society (1/million), Triple Nine Society (1/1000), and Mensa (1/50), among others.

  • Founder of United Sigma Intelligence Association (USIA): Kim founded USIA, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing together bright minds globally to address pressing challenges. This association reportedly includes Nobel Prize winners and other prominent intellectuals.

  • "The 2nd Tony Buzan": He has been awarded the title "The 2nd Tony Buzan" as the official intellectual successor to Tony Buzan, the inventor of Mind Maps, and serves as an Honorary Professor in Creative Thinking at the Tony Buzan Academy and University. He also holds honorary council memberships in various mind sports organizations.

  • NeuroStory: He is the founder and CEO of NeuroStory, a company recognized by the South Korea Ministry of SMEs and Startups as a brain digital healthcare innovator, focusing on AI-powered solutions for brain health.

  • Academic Background: YoungHoon Kim has studied academic degrees in psychology, neuroscience, counseling & coaching, linguistics, sociology, philosophy, and nondenominational theology at institutions like King's College London, University of London, Korea University, and Yonsei University. He also holds honorary doctorates in cognitive science, education, and psychology.

  • Recent Public Statements: Recently, YoungHoon Kim has made headlines for publicly professing his Christian faith, stating, "As the world's highest IQ record holder, I believe that Jesus Christ is God, the way and the truth and the life."

It's worth noting that while he is widely recognized for his IQ, some online discussions exist questioning the verifiability of his claims or the nature of the tests he took. However, official organizations and media outlets have reported on his achievements and recognition.

The brightest minds reach higher and realize that they are only just beginning to grasp the mind of God. Faith has nothing to do with IQ except to put one's intellectual gifts into perspective.

Statistics are statistics. It doesn't matter how many or how prestigious the organizations that recognize him are, their recognition doesn't make an IQ of 276 meaningful or possible.

Also, does he even have a real PhD? His bio only lists honorary doctorates and says he "studied academic degrees" but not that he received any degrees. I'm sure he has at least one, but he's definitely fluffing his credentials.

That said, if people who uncritically accept his claims are strengthened in their faith by the headline, I guess that's good for them, as long as their faith isn't shaken if he comes out tomorrow and says he's become an atheist.

Seems pretty smart to me. :)

GIGA SOCIETY™ HAS ANNOUNCED THAT DR. YOUNGHOON KIM FROM SOUTH KOREA HOLDS THE HIGHEST IQ 276 SCORE EVER RECORDED IN THE WORLD.

As of 2024, Dr. YoungHoon Kim established the world record title “The World’s Highest IQ Person Now” with IQ 276 verified by the Official World Record®, World Memory Championships and World Memory Sports Council, which is in official partnership with Guinness World Record. His record accreditation as having the world’s highest IQ comes from the World Memory Sports Council, World Memory Championships, World Speed Reading Championships, World Mind Mapping Championships, GIGA Society, Supertalent World Record & Supertalent of the World, Korea Masterpiece & Master Certification Committee, Challenge Korea Headquarters, Korea Best Record Institute, Korea Record Institute, World Genius Directory, Global Genius Registry, Esoteriq Society, Ultima Society, Nano Society. With perfect scores on various clinical and experimental high range intelligence tests, YoungHoon Kim’s high IQ scores were verified by the GIGA Society (1/billion), Yale Clinical Neuroscientist PhD (1/10 million), Olympiq Society (1/3 million), Mega Society (1/million), Triple Nine Society (1/1000), and Mensa (1/50). In 2024, Dr. YoungHoon Kim was named as number one with the world’s highest IQ by Reader’s Digest, The Economist, CNN, CNBC, Us Weekly, Newsweek, etc., and he was recognized and interviewed as a South Korean with the world’s highest IQ by Arirang TV under South Korea Ministry of Culture.

I'm not sure that I understand why you doubt that YoungHoon Kim has the world record for the world's highest IQ? How many reputable organizations about memory and IQ recognizing him as such do you want to see do so?

Because he's claiming an IQ that is not possible. IQ is supposed to be normally distributed with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 or 16, depending on the test being used. It's effectively a representation of where you place in intelligence relative to other people; someone with an IQ of 150 is roughly one in a thousand, an IQ of 176-177 is one in a million, etc. There's a helpful chart on this topic here: IQ Percentile and Rarity Chart

The smartest man in the world today is one in 8.2 billion. The IQ with the corresponding rarity is between 201 and 202. Another way to state the problem, from the IQ comparison site, is that "there are not enough people in the world to 'beat.'"

To be generous to Dr. (Mr.?) Kim, you could make the assumption that human intelligence hasn't changed throughout history (it has) and that it won't change in the future (it will) and increase the number of people to "beat" by including people who have already lived and died, as well as people who haven't been born yet. In theory, you could get a higher IQ than 201 by increasing the population and making these assumptions.

In practice, Kim's claimed IQ has a rarity of one in an octillion, which absolutely dwarfs the number of people who have ever lived and died. It's hard to convey with words just how ridiculously impossible this is. One octillion is about a thousand times more than the number of stars in the universe. This guy is not that rare.
How many reputable organizations about memory and IQ recognizing him as such do you want to see do so?
If you read the wording carefully, these organizations haven't all recognized him as the world's smartest man. All he claims is that his intelligence has been "verified" by these societies, which could just mean that he qualified for them. As a former TNS member myself, I can say that it's not hard to get into these societies if you do well on standardized tests. Mega and GIGA are not taken seriously by people in these high IQ communities anyway, since they're run by people whose qualification for their own societies is doubtful and who have certain idiosyncrasies you'd expect to see in people who would pretend to be world-class geniuses (see the disclaimer at the bottom of Kim's bio distancing him from the Mega society, for example).

Sorry but you are misusing statistics by demanding that an actual distribution fit a normal distribution. They never do in reality. You then demand that everyone has a place on a theoretical normal distribution, and consequently set an upper limit to intelligence based on world population. Real people in bulk only approximate a normal distribution. They cannot be forced into it.

Right. Near-zero probability events still happen. They happen all the time, in fact.

Of course they don't exactly fit it, which is why I said IQ is supposed to be normally distributed. There's wiggle room in all of the calculations, but that wiggle room doesn't account for a difference of 16 orders of magnitude in supposed rarity between his claimed IQ and the upper limit if we assume the distribution is actually normal.

Distributions are not idealized in reality. It’s that simple. You are still trying to force reality into an idealized model. And trying to rationalize an upper limit to intelligence based on standard deviations. Nice try but it fails simply because the world isn’t totally standard. Think of it this way. Normal distributions are themselves only applicable with means and standard distributions. Very few will be exactly normal. Most will have some ‘wobble’. And a few will be erratic. So erratic they end up with results you don’t like. THAT is normal.

Whether this guy is as smart as he claims is another matter. Your rationalization for why he can’t be as smart as he claims is a belly flop.

For myself I’d never make a claim to be the smartest person alive. He is at best only the smartest person alive belonging to the subset of those willing to toot their own horn. Remember Marilyn Vos Savant?

Thus the "wiggle room" I mentioned. The distribution can be skewed. There can be noise in the actual results of IQ testing, resulting in outliers. There are a lot of ways to describe how the idealized normally-distributed IQ model doesn't match reality.

Those nonideal properties can still be characterized, though, and you can still calculate the probability of getting a certain score. If we want to talk about nonideal IQ, i.e. "what one can score on a test" rather than "where one falls in the distribution of the population," then you can get a score higher than 201. But you can still calculate the probability of that result being accurate by comparing it to the test's underlying model.

Once adjusted for education, there really is only very weak evidence of a difference between extremely intelligent people, and ordinary people, when it comes to religiosity or belief in God.

Personality is a greater factor. Somebody with a high degree of openness to experience is less likely to have traditional religious beliefs, and more likely to have mystical inclinations that don't fit easily with traditional religions (Goedel, Oppenheimer, Schweitzer). And education in general has a tendency to expose people to different points of view and weaken conventional religiosity.

Probability involves the application of a model to approximate reality. It does not and cannot determine reality. An outlier is what it is.
