The reason for Jesus' oration of John 6.

John 6:15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone. NKJV

Jesus knew that they wanted to take Him and make Him King of Israel. They wanted to live in a kingdom where they did not have to work for their daily bread. The earthly kingdom where the Jews would be in charge of the world is what almost every Israeli believed would happen when the Messiah came. This was not, as we know, the plan of God.

John 6:49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world." 52 The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?" 53 Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread which came down from heaven — not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever." NKJV

Jesus knew that telling the crowd about eating of human flesh and drinking blood, would repel almost everyone not drawn by the Father. Thereby eliminating the threat of forcefully making Him king.

John 6:66 From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. 67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also want to go away?"

68 But Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 70 Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?" 71 He spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would betray Him, being one of the twelve. NKJV

It did just as Jesus knew it would.

John 6:59 These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum. 60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, "This is a hard saying; who can understand it?" NKJV

He did it in the synagogue to ensure the Priests heard Him. He would not have to worry about the threat to God's planned rejection of Him.

John 7:1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill Him. NKJV

If Jesus was speaking of eating real human flesh and drinking real human blood He would be guilty of urging the Jews to commit a sin. If Jesus did that He Himself would be guilty of sin. Therefore, the know that He was speaking spiritually and not committing a sin.

Now He could concentrate on teaching the 12.

Matthew 26:26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." 27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom." NKJV

As we know Jesus did explained the spiritual meaning of the flesh and blood.

John 18:8 Jesus answered, "I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way," 9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, "Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none." NKJV

Jesus had to do a lot of things to keep God's plan on track. These are just two of them that we know of.

Also, John 6:26 Jesus answered them and said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were filled. "

I find this verse interesting as if Jesus is having that very common human experience of feeling used. Yes, he said , "Feed the hungry" and he even did so on serval occasions. But he was also aware that he was setting up for a kind of dependency that he did not intend. A gesture of generosity on one occasion turns into an expectation. Been there, done that!

John 2:24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man. NKJV

Yes, Jesus knew what each person was in need of. He knew that a lot of the people were just looking for a free meal. Yet, He still gave. In today's world the psychologists would say Jesus was doing them a disservice.

Thank you
