Mary Miller says she’s ‘deeply troubled’ by Sikh man leading House floor prayer in deleted xenophobic post

The Republican member of Congress initially misidentified the man — who was invited to the House by another member — as Muslim

Miller wrote on X that the man, Giani Surinder Singh, “should never have been allowed” to lead the prayer and called for Congress to uphold the “truth” that “America was founded as a Christian nation.”

Miller’s original post incorrectly identified Singh as Muslim. She subsequently corrected the post before deleting it entirely.

“Congresswoman Miller should apologize for her remarks — to both the Sikh and Muslim communities, because no one should be targeted on the basis of their identity,” [Sikh Coalition leader] Singh said in a statement to POLITICO. “We encourage Congresswoman Miller to learn this lesson from her Sikh constituents, and would be happy to facilitate these conversations.”

“I’m troubled by my colleague’s remarks about this morning’s Sikh prayer, which have since been deleted,” Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.) wrote on X. “Throughout the country—and in the Central Valley— Sikh-Americans are valued and respected members of our communities, yet they continue to face harassment and discrimination.

It isn’t a christian country nor was it founded on those principles. Freedom of religion is what it says. He has every right to pray as do others and he isn’t the first non christian to do so. Another knucklehead making a stink about unimportant things while ignoring real issues.

It's actually common for some people to confuse Sikh's with Muslims because they aren't aware or educated about different religions and or traditions.

I think some Muslims and Hindus also wear the turban, someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Beliefs about God

Sikhs have many words to describe God. The name most widely used for God by Sikhs is Waheguru, which means 'wondrous enlightener'. Sikhs believe that there is only one God, who created everything. They believe that Waheguru must remain in the mind at all times. Sikhism is a way of life, and so Sikhs’ beliefs reflect their actions on a daily basis and bring them closer to Waheguru. It sounds like a beautiful belief system. If Christian, those listening to Dhillon's prayer could, if they chose, say a silent "we ask this in Jesus' name,
Amen," if it makes them feel better. There is nothing "heretical" in praying to God.

Not to mention, they apparently don't care to learn.

The types of turbans are distinct.

:tutu: They also have eyebrows and noses!!!
You totally took that the wrong way. I was pointing out an Islamic faction that wear turbans per Riley's inquiry as to why some might get Indian Sikhs mixed up with certain Muslim groups. I should have said Sunni instead of Talaban, but Talabon is what popped into my head at the time.

I'm no turban expert, but the Sikh turbans I see [including one former coworker's] always are very tightly tied, have that prominent fold right dead center of the forehead, and are usually colorful, as shown in that search. They do seem pretty distinct to me. (Although again this could be bias on my part, because I assume a person is a Sikh because I see that distinctive turban that says Sikh to me.)

It’s my understanding they don’t cut their hair, so that’s why they wear them.
