"The pebble discovered in the San Lázaro rock-shelter (Segovia, Central Spain) is the oldest known non-utilitarian object with a fingerprint made in Europe. Its morphology and the strategic position of an ocher dot, where a dermatoglyphic image has been detected, may be evidence of symbolic behavior. This object contributes to our understanding of Neanderthals’ capacity for abstraction, suggesting that it could represent one of the earliest human facial symbolizations in Prehistory"

There are 2 pictures of the pebble in question .Does it look like a face with a nose coloured in?

I heard this on BBC America and I wondered how good it was. I was guessing that they were overly optimistic. Based on those pictures, I think I'm right.

It's interesting enough that they might have a fingerprint. The pigment may also be interesting. But, a face? Eeeeeh ...

Well ,I didn't read through the lengthy paper .
Maybe when you hold it in your hand the likeness becomes more apparent.

The seeming confidence of the authors in the likelihood of their interpretation doesn't ring with me.

I might go with the ochre being used for the body and even the stone being some kind of an applicator or the paint either dripping onto the stone or being used to wipe paint from the finger.

Of course if the body is being painted then that would count as art too even if utilitarian?

Just the one stone found .If another turns up that would be interesting.
