  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Though it’s forbidden, more than a quarter of Christians believe in astrology: study

Though consulting astrology or horoscopes is forbidden in Scripture, more than a quarter of Christians say they believe the stars and planets have some impact on human destiny, according to a Pew Research Center study.

The study was conducted in the fall of 2024 through a survey of a nationally representative sample of 9,593 U.S. adults.

Some 30% of U.S. adults stated that they consult astrology or a horoscope, tarot cards or a fortune teller at least once a year. Most, however, said they engaged in the practice for fun and few said they based major life decisions on what they are told.

It is a shame, but consistent with the high percentage of self identifying Christians and Catholics also believing in evolutionary theory over Biblical creation, opposing the death penalty while supporting abortion, embracing same sex marriage and the LGBT agenda, believing in heaven but rejecting hell, believing in Jesus but not viewing him as the only way to salvation. The sad state of affairs of today's believers is revealed well through both these surveys and the huge masses of congregations being drawn to false teachers in world-wide mega-churches.

The "for fun" aspect raises questions. Reading a newspaper horoscope: is that potentially for fun? Tarot cards are strongly in my "Nope" category and difficult to see how that's strictly fun, though acknowledge it could be. Dangerous fun, to be sure.

What I looked for in the study and didn't see is planting by the signs As far as I'm concerned this is astrology, but have known evangelicals to think the signs are something different and follow them for farming. FWIW, a grandfather got skeptical, did his own study, concluded it was planting time after the last killing frost and not the signs, and didn't look at the signs again.

Once toyed with the idea of publishing my own almanac for astronomical info, thought about adding the signs, and finally did a "Nope" because I think following the signs is really astrology.

All this said, if we look back there's always been an interest in divination among Christians, despite warnings in the scripture not to go there. I'm ashamed to say I understand it, and can say it comes from lack of faith in God.

It reminded me someone said the horoscopes in the newspapers are so vague it can virtually be applied to anyone ;)
