Greenland signs lucrative minerals deal with Europe in blow to Trump
The Arctic territory has issued a 30-year mining permit to a Danish-French consortium.
Greenland has allowed a Danish-French consortium to mine a rock which is key to the production of aluminum....
What To Know
Greenland Anorthosite Mining (GAM) was granted permission to extract anorthosite, a white rock composed mainly of aluminum, micro silica, and calcium. The firm plans to ship crushed anorthosite from the west of Greenland for use by the fiberglass industry.
In announcing the 30-year permit, Greenland's Mineral Resources Minister Naaja Nathanielsen said the goal was to scale the project to become a climate-friendly alternative to bauxite in producing aluminum for aircraft, vehicles and defense. In announcing the 30-year permit, Greenland's Mineral Resources Minister Naaja Nathanielsen said the goal was to scale the project to become a climate-friendly alternative to bauxite in producing aluminum for aircraft, vehicles and defense.
Why France/Denmark? One reason is pointed out by Adam Mockler in is Substack:
After years of trying to intimidate Greenland into a mining deal (remember the “I want to buy Greenland” stunt?), the country has finally signed a 30-year minerals agreement. But not with the United States. They signed with a French firm.
Why? Because the French didn’t come in like imperial clowns. They came in with a strategy. A real one. They did the boring but essential work: drafting a detailed proposal, following Greenland’s laws, and treating the process with respect. They didn’t posture for the cameras. They negotiated.
Diplomacy can be way more effective than bullying and insulting.
