My government currently has 30% tariffs on most of the Chinese products whereas they have 10% tariffs on American products. The USA did not blink or buckle to the Chinese government. Meanwhile, the Chinese economy is in dire straits and the Chinese government & the Chinese economy needs American customers far more than we really need products from China.
So what you are saying is that you'll end up paying close to 30% more for their goods. And they'll only pay close to 10% extra on yours. And for some completely inexplicable reason, you think that's a good deal.

Well, I've been following it very closely indeed. I have no idea what Chinese companies were telling their governments, but I certainly know what US ones were telling the white House.

And then we have Trump nonsensically suggesting that kids only need two dolls instead of thirty and hey, what if they cost a few bucks more (and wasn't he going to drop prices from Day One?). Which is exactly what was going to happen. The Chinese would have dug in and worn any economic problems. I mean, these guys play for real. I was being facetious when I asked about the pressure Chinese companies might have put on the Chinese leadership. I can tell you without any doubt that it was zero. Their system doesn't work like that.

He folded. The whole world watched as he did and that will impact any discussions that he has with anyone else. And try to bluff any of the major players? They'll get the best deal they can while behind the scenes they'll be making deals to go elsewhere. It's a big world out there. Trump thinks it revolves around him. He's learning that it doesn't.

Yes. Because the Chinese government is not a friendly government and the USA, as well as the rest of the world, really ought not have been paying trillions of dollars into China. America and the rest of the world should stop supporting the Chinese government with trillions of dollars. American & other international corporations really ought to have their manufacturing facilities in nations that don't have a communist one-party dictator style government.

So why don't you stop buying their goods? I mean you personally. And your family. And all your friends. Why do Walmart et al keep importing them? Because you shop there. Do you really need me to explain this to you any further?

Why do you keep buying your shoes from Vietnam? Your aluminium from Canada? Your clothes from India? Your white goods from China? Your food from Mexico? It's because you can't produce those things at home at the price you pay those countries. And you (the US as a whole) have been complaining about the cost of living. So what does Trump do? He makes everything more expensive! Brilliant.

But wait. He wants you to produce those goods at home, in the good ol' US of A. But can you? Well, some of them you can. Eventually. With enough investment. So why aren't you doing it now? Well, good grief, I just explained. You can't make them at home as cheaply as you can buy them from overseas. If you could then you would. It would make perfect sense. But you can't. So that's why you buy them from Walmart!

And all those toys and computers and a.c. units and fridges and laptops and toys that you buy from China? Well Trump just made them 30% more expensive! What a businessman!

You must be so pleased.

Before President Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods in 2025, the average U.S. tariff rate on Chinese imports was approximately 20.8%, as established during the Biden administration. This rate primarily stemmed from tariffs imposed during Trump's first term (2017–2021) and maintained or slightly increased by the Biden administration, with a notable adjustment in September 2024 that raised the average from 19.3% to 20.8% So we’re only talking about a 9% increase.

Trump has actively sought to isolate China economically by urging its trading partners to reduce their trade engagements with China. This strategy involves leveraging tariff negotiations to pressure over 70 countries to scale back their dealings with China in exchange for reduced tariffs on their exports to the U.S. The aim is to diminish China's role in global supply chains and compel Beijing to make trade concessions.

It shows why Trump is a bona fide 100% imbecile and extortionist if he expects America's trading partners and allies to play ball under the threat of on going 10% tariffs.
To illustrate how this has spectacularly failed, Australia which has a trade deficit with America but is subject to Trumps 10% tariff extortion racket, has agreed to increase its beef exports to China to make up for the ban on American beef exports.

Ah but before we were going to be paying 145% markup on Chinese goods. See Trump is already hard at work undoing the mess he created just a couple weeks ago.

And? More reason to stop buying their goods. Where you'll get what you want I have no idea. Do you think you're going to suddenly find a way to make everything cheaper in the US? The thing that puzzles me is that if you could, why didn't you do it before?

Maybe you can answer that.

I guess he thinks it's like someone telling you he's going to cut your wages by 50%. And when you complain, he says 'Well, I've done a great deal and I'm sure you'll be pleased. I'm only going to cut them by 10%'. Gee, thanks boss. You really have my best interests at heart.

A 9% increase is not a 30% increase, as you’ve kept repeating. Of course things are cheaper were there’s slave labor or close to it. Do you want to support that just so you can save $4.50 on what was a $50 purchase?

From here: https://apnews.com/article/china-us-tariffs-timeline-trump-xi-1eeed2865dc7b14e23d7eb8069ba41ea and here: How US tariffs on China have changed since Trump's first term

Jan 2018: Trump puts 30% on Solar panels.
April 2018: He puts 25% on Chinese aerospace, machinery and medical industries.
Sep 2018: Now it's 10% on a wider variety of general goods.
May 2019: Raised to 25% on those goods..
Feb 2025: Introduced 10% on everything.
April 2025: Raised it to 34%.
April 2025: Raised it to 104%
April 2025: Raised again to 145%
May 2025: Back to 30%

So now it's 30% extra you'll pay on Chinese goods. The Chinese will pay 10% more for US goods. Those are the current figures and the ones you need to try to concentrate on.

China being that stubborn country that requires US importers to actually send money to get stuff shipped over.

It's 30% v 10% at the moment. Please concentrate on those figures. Now whether you want to pay the extra is entirely up to you. Australia isn't in a trade war with China. You are. You, being the US, can win the war by not buying Chinese goods. Off you go. Start a movement. Write to your Congressman or woman. Picket Walmart. What you do is up to you. But as I said, where you're going to get the same goods at the same price is beyond me. They'll be more expensive if bought from another country (and you have tariffs on everyone) and a lot more expensive at some time in the future if you try to build them at home.

So are you going to put the lie to Trump's promise that he was going to bring down prices and take a financial hit? Are you prepared for empty shelves while you're trying to work out where to get the equipment to make what you want, where to get the labour, where to get the basic materials, build the factories etc? Trump seems to think that all this will magically appear.

You're being taken for a ride.

So Trump negotiated a 9% additional import tax on imported Chinese goods that didn't exist before. What success. SMH.

Trump is the man who has hoisted all the tariffs onto you. And we're not just talking about China. We're talking all countries, India, the UK, Germany, the whole of the EU. I'm surprised he hasn't slapped one onto the Vatican. After all he did so with a small island that only has penguins for inhabitants.

Are you going to start manufacturing everything you get from the Chinese or are you going to wear the extra cost - imposed by Trump. Let me know. Let's discuss it. Let's find out how you're going to do it and drop prices. I'm keen to know how you think it's going to be done.

I'm not worried about it. Despite all your warnings the sky still hasn't fallen and there's more good news than bad.
