Watching with interest. Apparently he was one of Pope Francis' men. American Pope at this time in history. Fascinating. What do we know about him beyond a tie to Francis? He seems to be a mystery to the normies out there.

That’s pretty much some of the things I’m hoping for. Being a centrist makes me think he might be able to bring both sides together or at least promote more understanding.
I was enthused when pope Francis first appeared. Not doing that again. I was an eager popesplainer for couple of years too. Not gonna do that again either. I hope pope Leo XIV is a good pope. I will pray hard for him. And then I'll wait and see. I was so spoiled by pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI.

Spoken like a TLMer
And yet there is a credible report that cardinal Prevost actually favored the TLM for daily mass. That he was for a while the only one at the USCCB who had an indult to say that mass.

I pray he is a good pope but we are allowed to respectfully disagree with him if something pops up to disagree with. But I must say, I have had enough of that. I’ll be happy with clarifications when needed and all that comes with being a shepherd. Right now, I’m just wondering what one does on his first day as pope. ;)

My opinion of presidents playing golf is highly positive. The more golf the less bad governance.

I would not be upset at all if Leo XIV took the night off, went to bed early, had breakfast and a a private mass and then prayed the morning office. Took a private tour of the Vatican museums. I don't need for him to have submitted his first encyclical, named six new cardinals, forty new bishops, and arranged six trips to six continents. All he has to do is be pope for a while and not make a mess.

I liked the first words he said about peace. I’m really anxious lately so that hit home for me.

I’d love to be able to observe. Where will he reside? Will he do as Pope Francis did? I did notice he wore the traditional red cape. Something Pope Francis did not want to wear.

I feel for you. Anxiety is a real burden to bear. I liked that he greeted us with “Peace be with you” as well. Something we all need. :praying:

Here you go @FaithT -

Pope Leo XIV greets the faithful and the world invoking peace and pledging to work for a united Church faithful to Jesus and to the Gospel.

Pope Leo XIV greeted the city of Rome and the world with these words at his first appearance as the Successor of Peter from the Central Loggia of St Peter's Basilica:

Pope Leo XIV: Greetings to Rome and to the world

Peace be with you! Dearest brothers and sisters, this was the first greeting of the risen Christ, the good shepherd who gave His life for the flock of God. I, too, would like this greeting of peace to enter your hearts, to reach your families and all people, wherever they are; and all the peoples, and all the earth: Peace be with you.

This is the peace of the Risen Christ, a disarming and humble and preserving peace. It comes from God. God, who loves all of us, without any limits or conditions. Let us keep in our ears the weak but always brave voice of Pope Francis, who blessed Rome - the Pope who blessed Rome and the world that day on the morning of Easter.

Allow me to continue that same blessing. God loves us, all of us, evil will not prevail. We are all in the hands of God. Without fear, united, hand in hand with God and among ourselves, we will go forward. We are disciples of Christ, Christ goes before us, and the world needs His light.

Humanity needs Him like a bridge to reach God and His love. You help us to build bridges with dialogue and encounter so we can all be one people always in peace.

Thank you Pope Francis!

Why are people apprehensive of an American Pope?
They aren’t as far as I know. It’s just a surprise we have an American pope for the first time in history.

Yeah - considering that this country didn't exist when we had our first Popes. :)

True but it’s still a huge break from what we have been used to.

It can sometimes be hard to wrap our minds around how old the Church is. When Simon Peter was made first Rock of the Church, Tiberius was Emperor in Rome. Hebrew priests were still sacrificing in the temple. France did not exist.

ps I found it amusing that his middle name is Francis, lol.
I'm not at all apprehensive of an American pope per se. I would have been in extasy if they had chosen cardinal Burke. I would have been really stewing if cardinal Cupich or cardinal McElroy was chosen. So I'm sort of middle of the road right now. I AM surprised that the cardinals picked ANY American. But that's a different sort of thing.

Sort of expected that it would be someone a bit like pope Francis, considering who appointed 80% of the voting cardinals. I am shocked they would ever pick an American and surprised they agreed on the fifth ballot.
That they picked an American was a huge shocker. I don't know that anyone saw that coming.
But so many have been praying, this is the new pope, and life goes on.
