WASHINGTON, May 8 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump privately urged House Speaker Mike Johnson during a phone call on Wednesday to raise the tax rate on the wealthiest Americans and close the carried interest loophole for Wall Street investors, two people familiar with the conversation said on Thursday.

Republicans are aiming to complete Trump's "one big beautiful bill" by late next week and pass it in the House ahead of the May 26 U.S. Memorial Day holiday.

Trump is pushing to raise the top tax rate from 37% to 39.6% for individuals earning $2.5 million and higher or joint filers earning $5 million, with carve-outs for small businesses, according to one source.

I fully support the president in these two measures.

Trump flip flops on this issue. Trump doesn’t want to raise taxes on the rich because he fears they’d leave the US
Could be this is just window dressing, make it seem like he wants those who are richer to pay a bit more. Course capital gains are taxed far less so many rich are not affected. The marriage bonus is quite large if one made 5 million you would save about 75,000 a year just for getting married. I guess those extra expenses for being married and rich do add up?

As I do. At last, something positive we can support.

Trump flip-flops on just about everything, apart from his own greatness and grievances.

If billionaires want to fly off to some banana republic or two-bit hellhole... good luck with that.

Captain! The Ferengi would be very interested in a base like this.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard:
Fine. Let's hope they find you as tasty as they did their past associates.
