National Weather Service offices around the country are on guard after recent threats to agency infrastructure — specifically Doppler weather radars — from a violent militia-style group, emails from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s security office show.

The group Veterans on Patrol, which the Southern Poverty Law Center defines as an anti-government militia organization, views the NWS’ network of Doppler radars as “weather weapons,” according to an internal NOAA email sent Monday and seen by CNN.

Previously in Veterans on Patrol:

What she and others didn’t know yet was that Veterans on Patrol is an anti-government group steeped in conspiracy theories and that ... the group was motivated to come to this small town because its members believed that the government was using the hurricane to move people here off lithium-rich land and stop them from getting it back, according to the group’s posts on Telegram, the messaging service.

On Sept. 29, an X user suggested that the supposed presence of lithium provided a motive for someone to “modify” the storm, to steal access to the mineral.

Groups such as Veterans on Patrol soon picked it up. “Isn’t it ironic how much lithium is available in the areas targeted by Helene?” the group asked in a Sept. 30 Telegram post.

[On Oct. 3, the group called for volunteers] “if you are willing to mobilize with North Carolina families and remove FEMA from North Carolina.”

I always knew there was more to those white balls than meets the eye.
When I was a kid in Houston, our utility room had a spigot for natural gas. My brother once filled a weather balloon with it to the point where the balloon just hovered wherever you let go of it. I remember being surprised how much force it had when thrown at a sibling.

Methane spigot. Sounds insane. Another thing to add to the "when we were growing up......!" list to throw at the young adults of today.

You know, it probably wasn't methane, but natural gas - I'm not all that clear on the difference. Our street lights were gas.

I remember discussing natural gas with someone and they kept saying it was a non renewable resource and I would respond that it's 94% methane, like what is comming up from the landfill.

If they can make a machine to milk cows 24/7, they gotta be able to make one that collects the farts.

Seems to be a result of electing a conspiracy theorist as a president. If one can succeed, why not another?

More likely the other way round. People's thinking was getting muddled by addictive ideological junk food media for decades prior. This primed them to buy a salesman's sugar high quick fix promises.

The tenement in Hell's Kitchen was built in the 1890s. It used to be gaslit and a hundred years later, the pipes were still live, though unused.

I thought Daniel Day Lewis and Leonardo DeCaprio destroyed that place.

Like with other conspiracy theories, I suspect it's rooted in the same sentiments...

The underlying sentiment being, that for a lot of folks, there's something discomforting about the the reality that bad things can randomly happen, so there's something comforting about feeling like they have an explanation (even if it's not a good one) for many folks because if there's "an answer" than that means there's something they can do to prevent it.

Just as an example, take for instance the conspiracy theory about GMOs causing cancer.

The real answer of "many cancers are seemingly random and pop up in people for reasons we don't fully understand yet" is scary for a lot of people and leaves them feeling powerless over the situation. Because that means they could try to do everything right, and wake up tomorrow with an pain in their abdomen that ends up being cancer.

However, the conspiracy answer of "It's the GMO foods that are causing the cancers" provides them with at least some sense of comfort because even though the notion indicates something nefarious, it still gives them a sense of control over the situation and the feeling of "Since I know what's causing it, there's something I can do about it, I can buy non-GMO foods to protect myself"

Yeah, people long for a story - especially if it includes an identifiable villain. If reality doesnt provide a story, they will make one up.

I tried to look for information on the link to their page, and no mention of weather, weapons, or NWS was found when searched for. I find it hard to believe that veterans, even infantry folk, haven't seen a radar.
