  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Toms River’s council has begun proceedings to forcibly acquire Christ Episcopal Church’s 11‑acre campus for “public use” at a time when the 160‑year‑old parish is seeking permission to open a 17‑bed shelter for the homeless.

During a contentious April 30 meeting, the council voted 4–3 to move forward with a plan that would let the town purchase the church and five other properties — or take them by force if the owners refuse to sell — to build two new public parks, the Episcopal News Service reported.

Mayor Daniel Rodrick, an outspoken critic of homelessness in the seaside community, was quoted as saying he wants pickleball courts, a soccer field, a playground and a skate park on the church grounds.

My most recent news on this is that the Episcopal bishop of NJ will be meeting today with Christ Church's priest and with legal representatives of the parish, the diocese, and the national church. Zoom meetings with larger groups will follow.

Christ Church has the support of our bishop and of many people across the diocese.

The closest I've been to condemnation proceedings are highway projects and ultimately the only thing that gets contested in court is the price awarded for land. I don't know if other condemnation proceedings are similar. I hope the church prevails but have seen otherwise.

Note: have recently seen church property condemned for a highway project. The congregation did eventually rebuild on a site nearby.
