  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Donald Trump says he is directing his government to reopen and expand Alcatraz, the infamous former prison on an island near San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.

In a message on his Truth Social site on Sunday, President Trump said that "for too long America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat criminal offenders".

The reopening of Alcatraz - once notorious as one of the US's toughest prisons - would serve as a "symbol of law, order, and justice," he said.

Leading Democrats said the proposal was "not a serious one". The maximum security facility, also known as The Rock, was closed in 1963 and it is currently operating as a successful tourist site.

Alcatraz closed because of maintenance issues and perception of brutal conditions. That didn't stop American Indian activists from occupying it in the late 1960s. Be that as it may, costs and another prison most have likely never heard of came to mind: Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, Georgia. Despite renovations, the Georgia State Prison became too old and outdated and was closed by the State of Georgia. Reopening Alcatraz would require extensive remodeling to the point where it probably would be cheaper to build another.

There is absolutly no need to reopen Alcatraz. ADX Florence not only exists but had to close down sections because they were not being used. There is plenty of capacity for high risk individuals. Those sections could be reopened far easier and cheaper then renovating Alcatraz, and operated on a lower per capita cost as well. It's all about perception to him.

Didn't think it through. It closed because it was too expensive to maintain.

Alcatraz became notorious due to clientele and difficulty of escape. Build a new prison in a difficult to escape from location and make new memories.
