Thanks, I hadn’t looked since yesterday when I heard of the quick rise in the market. Now it’s back down again.

I’m sure investors just love working in a bipolar economy.
One concerning thing is that other countries are selling their Treasury bonds. That indicates a lack of confidence in the US as they used to be seen as safe.
The sell off of Treasury Bonds and the insider trading that went on yesterday are not good for America.

Well with the instability and chaos constantly coming out of the White House every week, who could blame a country for losing faith in American leadership? The only thing saving us from becoming a global pariah is the fact we and our country can’t be so easily ignored. Otherwise the rest of the civilized world would have dropped the US a long time ago.

No, it hasn't.
Confederate sympathizers were propably supporters of the Democratic Party of that day. The party then is not the party now.
Your attempt to insult todays Democratic party, which passed the Civil Rights Act and is proDEI as in all should be treated equally and included in government as we are a very diverse group. From my interactions, it has been Trump supporters who say, "A (woman or black male or female) got the job? DEI hire." That is very bigoted as it assumes the person did not earn the job on their own merit.

It is pathetic to try and equate the Democratic party of 1860s to now in an effort to insult.

The Republicans Party sure changed.
Open a thread on it and I will be happy to completely debunk it yet again. This thread is about tariffs and I would like to stay on topic like the rules require.

My apologies to the OP for making a valid observation on Lincoln's death and creating an issue - I was only trying to point out a fact to my Australian friend.

A couple more months of this and they’ll learn to not take anything that President Trump says/does seriously, and then he’ll have to “up the ante”.
A couple more months? You think that's all it'll take?

I remember being that young and doe-eyed, once.

U.S. businesses sue to block Trump tariffs, say trade deficits are not an emergency

  • A group of [five] small businesses sued President Donald Trump, seeking to block new tariffs that he has imposed on foreign imports in recent weeks.
  • The lawsuit in the U.S. Court of International Trade alleges that Trump has illegally usurped Congress’ power to levy tariffs.
The Liberty Justice Center noted that the Trump administration imposed tariffs even on countries with which the United States does not have a trade deficit, “further undermining the administration’s justification.”

[Of course, if Republicans in Congress weren't gutless, they could call the President on this, but the House has redefined the day so that they don't have to.]

California has the same idea. Hold the president to the letter of the law.

Newsom to announce California lawsuit against Trump’s tariffs

The governor’s office said the legal action will argue that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which Trump cited to impose tariffs, does not grant him the ability to unilaterally adopt tariffs on goods imported into the U.S.

The case marks the first time Newsom has taken a lead role in any of the now 15 lawsuits that California has filed against the current Trump administration, signaling a potential departure from his more reserved approach to the president during Trump’s second term. Until now state Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta has acted as the face of California’s legal battles against the federal government while Newsom has generally maintained a distance from the back-and-forth court tussles.

The formula has no input for tariffs. Just trade imbalance.
Of course, the formula does just that. In the formula "ε" represents price elasticity for import demand. The tariff and non-tariff barriers to free trade are imputed to "ε". Note: "ε" can only be estimated prior to the data being available.

If the tariffs raise the prices of everyday items everyone needs to buy ...
Can you tell us the imported top 5 "everyday items everyone needs to buy"? A citation to a reputable source also necessary.

Sez who?

elasticity is simply a measure of the response in demand to changes in price.

In economics, elasticity measures the responsiveness of one economic variable to a change in another. For example, if the price elasticity of the demand of a good is −2, then a 10% increase in price will cause the quantity demanded to fall by 20%.

Cars and electronics would be at the top of the list. Don’t you have to drive places and use a phone or computer every day?

If you live in the US, just about everything in your house is made outside the US and will be needlessly more expensive now thanks to these tariffs.

What specific imported cars do we need? What specific electronics do we need? That the US has been taken advantage of by our international competitors (and adversaries) is exactly why the administration is moving to balance trade deficits.

Precisely the problem being addressed by the administration's trade policy to bring back those higher paying jobs to the US. Or do you want to just keep the hamburger flipper jobs?

A Wikipedia article that apparently you mined but did not entirely read?

The curves of demand and supply can only be estimated. Therefore, their elasticity can only be estimated. However, point elasticity is calculatable but only when the specific data is available. Stay tuned.

The only person who has claimed otherwise is you, since you have expressed that the elasticity is somehow dependent on tariffs, so that tariffs have a numerical role to play in the given equation.

Are you able to provide a source to evidence such an assertion?

"Taken advantage of", good grief. You really shouldn't take your economic advice from Trump. He doesn't know what he is talking about. They have stuff and we buy stuff.

What about the industrial policy? Do these rubes even have one?

You missed the boat. If only it were that simple. The truth is there are all kinds of tariffs and taxes on U.S. goods plus price manipulation by foreign countries. The trade deals that are being negotiated will only be agreed upon if the deals are FAIR TO BOTH SIDES.

Yes, you.

As your tariff formula shows and as already explained: The elasticity of demand and supply is the ratio of a percentage change in price to the percentage change in quantity. Do tariffs change prices? Yes.

Thank you for your insight, ie., "They have stuff and we buy stuff". I think the rube in this discussion is not the administration.
What about the industrial policy? Do these rubes even have one?
Bring manufacturing stuff back to the US. Investment in plant and equipment first, training employees simultaneously. Tax those higher paying jobs at the current tax rates to reduce the the ongoing unsustainable federal deficits. How's that for a starter?

The result, so far, has been to kill our exports overseas. Canada is a great example, where people are intentionally refusing to buy products from the US. There are also those businesses that used to manufacture products in the US and are closing down their plants here, since many of the customers were overseas and, due to the tariffs, they can't sell the US made products overseas anymore. Instead, they are starting to move their factories outside the US, so they can keep their businesses going. And this doesn't include businesses like Target and Walmart, who told Pres. Trump that their shelves will be empty because they are losing the Chinese suppliers for their goods.

What specific imported cars do we need?

Cars that Americans can afford to buy.

Nearly 80 percent of cars priced at less than $30,000 will be subject to 25 percent tariffs, including popular vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Chevrolet Trax, according to Cox Automotive.
