  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do I have the spirit of this world?

I had a question- I am a computer buff, I like building computers, it is my hobby, but I feel like me buying computer parts and other things that I want is the spirit of this world. Do you think I have the spirit of this world? I am a computer technician for my line of work, if I don't buy computer parts myself I am going to be incompetent in my line of work, if I had to recommend a product to a customer I couldn't do it because I wouldn't be able to buy technology myself, also my co-workers would probably wonder what is wrong with me. If I am like that customers won't like me and no one will come to my computer store, if I am like that I might even get fired. I feel like I have the spirit of this world but I might be getting deceived, I am not sure about it, what do you think? Thanks!

Can you elucidate? I'm having a bit of trouble understanding how doing computer stuff is the spirit of this world. My brother fixes junker cars, for a hobby, (and even for a ministry). No problem. We all live in this world. That doesn't mean we are part of this world.

I'd suggest you inundate yourself with Scripture, and get an idea of what is really going on. Read the Gospel of John, and specially the 1st and the 17th chapters. Repeatedly. Then read Romans 8. Repeatedly.

The "spirit of this world" has more to do with the "mind of the flesh" than with what you are interested in that this world offers.

Consider the difference, for example, of what you are worried about, compared to living according to a mentality of, "I am my own person. I do what I want. Not even God can tell me what to do."

Computers are neither good or bad, like most of the things we use, they can be used for good or evil .
If used to further the kingdom then good if used for evil then that is not of Christ.
