I was just awoken by the news. It happened at 7:35am the morning after Easter Sunday.

We’ll be covering this at length on EWTN, I’ll do what I can to offer any more details that come my way and I know @Michie will be on it.

Requiem aeternam Dona ei, Domine
Et lux perpetua luceat ei
Requiescat in pace
Amen. :crossrc:

ETA: EWTN News will be going live at 10am ET/7am PT with coverage so feel free to tune on TV or online to see more of this historical moment.

It’s sad. I wonder who will be next? Another liberal Pope or more conservative?
He has sort of stacked the cardinals so I expect a Pope more on the liberal side.

My gut feeling is you're right, although I think it's interesting that a couple of smart Catholics have said lately they think it could actually swing the other way mostly because of "Francis fatigue". That even the more modernist and questionable Cardinals got tired of the controversy and the heat that was always hitting the Vatican because of misinterpreted statements or comments he made, the official decisions he made or didn't make, who he publicly supported and opposed, etc.

A few weeks ago I recall Taylor Marshall saying that even liberal Cardinals may be wary of electing a Francis II if that person intends to continue Francis' agenda. Francis was diminishing the value of being a Cardinal through the synodality stuff and even, I think, in a legislative way. Cardinals like being Cardinals so they wouldn't wanna pick someone who would reduce their role or perhaps even demote them.

So some theorize that we could see a more conservative pope just to calm the seas for a little while. Which I kinda think is what we'd get if, say, Pizzaballa were to be elected. He's wouldn't completely undo everything Francis did, he wouldn't have a "Second Cadaver Synod", he might not even properly chastise the Germans, but he might throw trads a bone by reversing Traditionis Custodes to really relieve the pressure building up among laymen.

I was listening to the radio today and Schneider was mentioned. But I do not think there is a snow ball’s chance of that. Pope Francis made sure he handpicked enough cardinals to make an election of someone like Schneider difficult if not impossible.

I would prefer a more conservative, but that could mean that my dad and I could bark even more if such Pope said some controversial remarks about a certain religion :sigh:
