  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does blasphemy against the Holy Spirit mean attributing the works of the Holy Spirit to Satan?

I don't think so.

Some Christians speak in tongues today and claim that they are enabled by the Holy Spirit. In response, some cessationists believe that speaking in tongues today is from Satan.

Have these cessationists blasphemed against the Holy Spirit, the unforgivable sin?

No, not necessarily.

Why do some people think that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit means attributing the works of the Holy Spirit to Satan? Where does this confusion about the unforgivable sin come from?

Mark 3:

22 the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He [Jesus] is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.”
These scribes had hardened their hearts against Jesus. Jesus replied:

28 “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”
These scribes blasphemed against the Holy Spirit due to their hardened hearts.

30 for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
In this case, the scribes accused Jesus had an unclean spirit in him. By this act, they blasphemed against the Holy Spirit, i.e., they committed the unforgivable sin because of their hardened hearts, not because they attributed the power of the Holy Spirit to the prince of demons.

Yet God does not forsake His people, or abandons His promises

No, but that generation of Israel cause their desperation throughout the world and the destruction of Jerusalem.

What ever reason one says a work of God is of the devil, has credited satan with a miracle from God.

We have had a poster here say that a particular Church is not a Church. Does your argument stretch that far?

I would apply my conclusion if the "sayer" had he accredited a church of God to the devil.

The point of blasphemy of the Holy Spirt is it results in denying Christ is the Messiah. Which means you can't believe in Jesus for forgiveness. Which therefore makes it an unforgivable sin, because it cuts off the only way to forgiveness.
