Jewish Voice for Peace Demonstrating at Trump Tower

Jewish protest group Jewish Voice for Peace (NYC) is holding a demonstration at Manhattan's Trump Tower to call for the release of Mahmoud Khalil, the US permanent resident who was recently arrested for protesting the Gaza genocide.

Mr. Khalil, a prominent figure in pro-Palestinian demonstrations on the campus, was arrested by federal immigration agents in New York on Saturday and is being held in Louisiana. He earned a master’s degree from Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs in December.

He has not been charged with any crime. But the Trump administration has accused Mr. Khalil of siding with terrorists and justified his detention by citing a little-used statute that allows the secretary of state to deport anyone whose presence is adversarial to foreign policy and national security interests.

I was at the gym this afternoon and the equipment I was using happened to be parked in front of the Fox News tv. They covered this non-event for the entire 30-ish minutes I was there. The sound wasn't on, but the anchors did not appear happy.

A Palestinian activist who led a coalition of seeking the “total eradication of Western civilization” responsible for riotous protests at Columbia University and Barnard College, and supporting terrorists and terrorist organizations (Hamas) is hardly something we need to accept from foreigners in this country. As a foreigner, they don't have the same rights as US citizens.
If an American tried the same type of thing in Russia, Iraq, Iran, North Korea, Mexico, or any number of other countries, they wouldn't be walking around free to lead citizens there in movements against their own people.

The ADL is hardly an objective source of information on anyone critical of the state of Israel. There's not really anything shocking there, aside from the outrage.

Okay? I'm just pointing out that there's hardly anything shocking in that article - it's just the ADL insisting that they're bad people for criticizing Israel. And given the ADL's biases, I need more than just their insistence to be convinced that a group that protests Israel is bad.

He should get his day in court to make his case. I don't know enough details, but I don't trust that Trump is being fair as he's attacked free speech rights on campuses in general. Deporting this student, who has a pregnant wife who is a US citizen, without being able to face his accusers to make his case would be an egregious human rights violation.

Our country fought a war over this, we are not going to let foreign students camp out on a university campus and harass Jewish students nor stop any classes. If any foreign student promotes a terrorist organization like Hamas they need to be sent packing. He can file a complaint from Gaza.

It needs to be proven in court that he was promoting a terrorist organization. I don't trust groups affiliated with radical pro-Zionist groups who have a vested interest in distorting the facts and shutting down dissent.

Frankly, no, we didn't. While most Americans disapproved of Hitler's persecution of Jews (and Catholics), they didn't consider it a reason to enter the war. Public knowledge of the death camps didn't come until 1944, and it wasn't until 1945 and the end of the war that the full scope of what had been done became clear.

The interventionist argument was focused on containing/stopping Hitler as a threat to global geopolitics - having Europe under the control of a dictator would be a bad thing, France falling was bad, Britain falling would be worse, etc. And in the end, Japan made the decision for us by attacking Pearl Harbor.

We fought a war to become a nation of laws, Lex Rex, to be a Constitutional republic. Mahmoud Khalil has not been charged, let alone convicted and sentenced (which is the Trump standard of being considered a criminal). He was disappeared - ghost of Pinochet! - a clear violation of the habeas corpus rights. He is being punished for political speech - a clear violation of his First Amendment rights (and yes, permanent residents, all residents, have rights under the law).

This guy is not an American citizen, Khalil is a guest, but he is subject to our laws. The Immigration and Nationality Act states that whoever “endorses or espouses terrorist activity or persuades others to endorse or espouse terrorist activity or support a terrorist organization” is guilty of a crime and can be deported. Khalil was a leader of a protest that handed out Hamas literature. Likewise he violated the presidential executive order against anti-Semitism. I expect Khalil to soon be charged.

He has been arrested, but not convicted AND sentenced? Well, I have it on ~~good~~ vociferous authority that one can't be considered an actual criminal until all bars are met - including appeals up to and including the Supreme Court.

A very vague statement. Vandalism and intimidation can be criminal acts, but racism is protected by the 1st Amendment - there's not much that the Justice Department can do about people saying racist things.

And, in order to show that someone has violated our laws, they must be charged with a crime, tried in front of a jury of their peers, and convicted by that jury.

None of this represents a "law" that can be violated - like all executive orders, it's a set of instructions for Executive Branch departments, setting priorities and areas of focus.
