  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Because I'm working this weekend, I will not be able to attend the Palm Sunday service at my church (Anglican). I am exploring options that offer evening services, and it looks like there are two. One of them is a parish of the American National Catholic Church. From what I've read, it seems like they're a liberal implementation of post-Vatican II Catholicism. Obviously, they're not in communion with Rome. Does anyone here have any experience with churches of this variety?

As far as I know, they are liberal on social issues, and are very small in number. I only know about them because I think there was a parish in North Dakota.

There is also the Old Catholic Church, which separated during Vatican I, and the Polish National Catholic Church, which the RCC recognizes as valid, but illicit.

Yeah, I get the impression that they aren't very common anywhere. This particular parish operates out of an Episcopal church. It seems like there is some general adherence to Catholic theology minus papal supremacy and infallibility, traditional sexual ethics, and closed communion.

I've been to a few Independent Catholic congregations. Most are liberal, but still recognizably Catholic, similar to Old Catholics, who for the most part were formed due to theological liberalism in Germany and the Netherlands.
