  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The manufactured Social Security panic began before President Trump even won last November’s election, with the liberal establishment claiming that he wanted to “cut Social Security” and kick seniors off their benefits. In reality, Trump has repeatedly promised to “not touch” Social Security.
But the lies and misdirection have only grown more egregious since Trump took office, with every upgrade to how the program is run and every revelation of fraud treated as tantamount to ripping grandma’s check out of her hands.

So many of those against Trump listen to the same old propaganda without checking the facts.

I don't believe media lies. That's why I don't watch Fox News or Newsmax, don't read Washington Times or the Federalist Society news.
You can be assured you don't have to worry about me.

Media outlets have become little more than propagandist toadies. Add to that shows like "The View" that spew vitriolic detestation of anything outside of their purview - IMHO it is the gullible and under informed who follow such tripe.

Every four years we hear the fear mongering the big meannies are going to take your SSI and every four years the poorly informed fall for it. it seems a lot like Munchausen syndrome by proxy

Fact is there is a huge shortfall coming up. What is Trump doing to fix it? Yes, Doge is helping with the fraud. This article though has some of it backwards, Those unauthorized social security numbers are people who pay into the system but never get to collect. Removing the taxes too by the way helps those in the higher income brackets the most. It also leaves a budget hole.
"Thus, we estimate that earnings by unauthorized immigrants result in a net positive effect on Social Security financial status generally, and that this effect contributed roughly $12 billion to the cash flow of the program for 2010,” writes Stephen Goss, chief actuary of the Social Security Administration." While that is an old number, very few undocumented receive social security. I am not saying they should not be deported, I am just saying removing them hurts the social security trust fund in the pocket. 3 common questions about Social Security, answered

Your title appears to be contradictory. On one hand, it states "do not believe in media lies," yet you have provided a link to an article from a media source to support up your claim.

What you actually mean is that one should not trust any media that you do not endorse.

For Social Security, I will refer to President Trump's announcement on the White House website.

The Trump Administration will not cut Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits. President Trump himself has said it (over and over and over again).

I find it hard to believe someone whose verified lies are in the thousands.
But I believe this one. He would have no qualms about hanging seniors out to dry, but it can't be done through reconciliation in the Senate.
He needs 60 votes, and while he may be inwardly seething, he tries to pretend giving seniors their own contributions back was his idea. Ugh.

"The Trump administration is putting the Social Security numbers of more than 6,000 illegal aliens into the same database that dead people’s numbers go into, a novel maneuver that effectively strips the individuals of their numbers and makes them ineligible for benefits. Of those illegal aliens entered into the database for dead people, the White House said that nearly 1,000 were receiving Medicaid benefits, while others were given student loans or collecting unemployment insurance. . . Another 92,000 illegal aliens with criminal convictions are expected to have their Social Security numbers entered into the database, the official went on to tell the outlet."

We will always have seasonal workers who come from Mexico and Central America to pick the crops which would otherwise rot in the fields.
We will always have seasonal immigrant workers who work in Trump's hotels as they have done for decades.
If they don't have Social Security numbers, how can they legally be paid? They are given work visas for a limited period but their employers are required to pay Social Security taxes on their wages, etc.

I doubt if the federal government will turn down money. But if they have criminal records they will be deported.

You have a point.

But, I will not criticize President Trump based on speculation. If he attempts to change Social Security benefits, then I will criticize him.

I understand the concerns some Democrats have about Social Security; they are valid. Over the past 50 years, many Republican politicians have wanted to change or modify Social Security benefits. Their concern is not that the benefits are bad, but that the program might end due to a lack of funds. In 2000, President Bush promised to invest in Wall Street to make Social Security solvent. Other Republicans have suggested options like increasing the retirement age or using different methods.

Whenever Republicans propose something, Democrats warn Americans that “This is the end, this is the end of Security benefits”. But it is not.

Changes to Social Security benefits require congressional approval, including 60 votes in the Senate—making it nearly impossible.

Let's review shall we -

There is NO legislation calling for the reduction or elimination of SSI
There is NO Republican Politician calling for the reduction or elimination of SSI
The President has stated publicly a number of time there are NO plans calling for the reduction or elimination of SSI

The Democratic Leadership (whomever is in charge today), has never presented any bill, or discussion citing the Republicans calling for the reduction or elimination of SSI

But let's believe that they are because?????

It is the same fear mongering they trot out every time their number go down in the polls - and they are crashing still. People just don't believe them anymore. After 40 years of hearing the Republicans are going after SSI and not ONE bill or piece of legislation being offered - there are just not that many gullible people left.

I mean - good grief - this tactic goes back to Ronald Reagan - who had to address it in a letter to Congress July 1981

The highest priority of my Administration is restoring the integrity of the Social Security System. Those 35 million Americans who depend on Social Security expect and are entitled to prompt bipartisan action to resolve the current financial problem.
At the same time, I deplore the opportunistic political maneuvering, cynically designed to play on the fears of many Americans, that some in the Congress are initiating at this time. These efforts appear designed to exploit an issue rather than find a solution to the urgent Social Security problem. They would also have the unfortunate effect of disrupting the budget conference and reversing the actions of a majority of both Houses of the Congress. Such a result would jeopardize our economic recovery program so vital to the well-being of the Nation.
In order to tell the American people the facts, and to let them know that I shall fight to preserve the Social Security System and protect their benefits, I will ask for time on television to address the Nation as soon as possible.
During this address, I will call on the Congress to lay aside partisan politics, and join me in a constructive effort to put Social Security on a permanently sound financial basis as soon as the 97th Congress returns in September.
Sincerely,
Ronald Reagan
People want to discuss being lied to - how about 44 years of being lied to about how the Republicans are going to end Social Security?

Where is the hue and cry about being lied to hundreds of thousands of times for more than 4 decades.

As we said, he would need 60 Senate votes. Lack of opportunity, not fairness, justice, or kindness, holds him back.

He hasn't proposed anything- your talking about things that are not happening, not being considered, and have never happened in 44 years.

I understand the need for vilification and dehumanizing - but let's stay in reality, it's just a suggestion

Are you asking us to become concerned over a matter that is unlikely to materialize? I wonder why.

Perhaps because the Constitution means nothing to the president. He violates it at least weekly, and if the judges overturn his illegal orders he ignores them.
Disability recipients are in greatest danger. He can't manipulate age, but he could cut half the disability recipients by having them reevaluated more stringently.
He could require all sorts of bureaucratic hoops to jump through each year to prove their status--and the poorest and sickest wouldn't be cyber savvy enough to keep up.
NY Workmen's Comp hounded my BIL for years. He was not a paperwork person, but my sister was, and did all the paperwork required.
