Bit of a silly question. Basically I enjoy playing video games granted I play them a whole lot less now but I have times where I play more than usual and might get back into them. One game though I do miss playing but feel like I shouldn't due to the themes even if they would still be considered a kid's game. This game is called Fire Pro Wrestling World. It was really fun and honestly I think one of the reasons I have been interested in playing it so much lately is because I was really into wrestling but stopped watching it since becoming a christian but do miss it. compared to other wrestling games it's probably a lot more tame. I think some of the reasons why I've been hesitant is due to the fact its violence (granted cartoon violence), and it might be something that would feed my boastfulness, pride, and exultation from creating characters. Probably embarrassing I know but still its just been on my mind lately and something I've been debating with. The only thing I can think of in the bible as to why it would be okay is the story of Jacob wrestling God and the thought that if God could wrestle a person and still be holy and perfect than maybe playing that wrestling game is okay lol. Idk if I'm wrong and if i am someone please correct me. Then the argument against it would be the things mentioned it could feed into and the verse talking about doing nothing for selfish ambition Philippians 2:3-4 but idk if that would apply because this would just be something in my leisure time. What do you all think like I said I know it's silly but I'm sure we have something silly we have dealt with before or will but I wanted to hear some insight. Thanks.

Edit - If a mod is reading this can you move it to the video games section of this site? Thanks

I've been a computer strategy wargame player for many years, it's great fun..:)
if that shocks anybody, consider this-
When the temple guards came to arrest Jesus in Gethsemane-
"Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)"(John 18:10) (picture below)
Jesus told him and his followers to sheath their swords, but the fact remains he allowed them to carry them in the first place, probably as a deterrent against muggers on their travels, thereby sending out the clear signal that weapons aren't evil in themselves.

I love creating characters. It's like creating a character for a comic book. It's just being creative. I'd say I take satisfaction in my toons rather than pride. And I have no idea who I'd boast to about them. It would be one of those situations where someone would smile and nod while waiting for me to stop blabbing about it.

I think it was more so due to me really enjoying wrestling so my pride and boastfulness envisioned myself as like this utter megastar lol.

Believe me, you're not the only one. I still have fantasies of grandeur on occasion. What matters is recognizing them for what they are. Silly and completely unrealistic. Well, speaking for myself at least.

Video games are part of a larger way to spend leisure time. One can get worldly imprint from video games, books, videos, music, as well as from many worldly activities. Your concern about the degree to which it affects you is a testimony that you may remain relatively immune from its negative effects.

There are some "weaker brothers" that may have a greater struggle and for whom endorsing an activity would not be recommended.

We have a responsibility to "redeem the time because the days are evil". However, at this point in history where relationships have become so impoverished, there is often little that can be done to encourage and exhort others. Our prosperity has provided a lot of time and little to do with that time, so killing some of it may simply be recreational.

If we are mature, we can instruct others (if any are interested). If we are not mature, we can learn (if we can find any that can teach what is useful and true). Often we are on our own looking here and there for a nugget or two of truth.

So, hopefully if you are playing less this is because you are discovering better things to do. But having something different to enjoy can be good.

So, yes we do need to not feed on and approve of violence. And you do seem to understand this. And, then, we should not wish harm and suffering on wrong people.

However, during a movie I can give in to the temptation to look down on certain characters and wish that they "get theirs". But this is not forgiving like Jesus on the cross > I and not the movie am the problem, then, how I am still capable of anti-love things.

Well . . . you know the Bible enough to use it to apply it and to see it can be used for your own preferences. So, we know God is the One who is able to guide us right.

So, yes, beware of how we can feed on the wrong things.

This can be a good place in the advice section so you don't have video players who might give you prejudiced answers. But people here, too, can be willing to justify certain things. You seem pretty aware of the issues. Enjoy trusting God with this. Learning God's will and learning how to love are worthwhile and very satisfying challenges and an education which won't leave us bored and lonely later.

Actually no not really. My life is really boring only "Better things" would be things that are away from electronics. I could do a deep dive into my life but I'm not going to. I don't/can't find satisfaction in God tbh but also understand that I wont find it in the world. I'm just following God because I know that he's the truth. I'm just tired of being a weaker faith christian it seems like and just want to enjoy things in this life with video games being one of them. I'm not saying this is what you should do in your walk with God this is just my situation it seems like.

The immature Christian life is defined by walking in the flesh (1Cor 3)
Things of the flesh are consumptive and ultimately unsatisfying.
You may be discovering a lack of satisfaction with the life lived for self.
Christian maturity lies in walking by the Spirit. This is a transition from selfishness to selflessness.

Here is a free pdf booklet on walking by the Spirit

it can be viewed as web pages here

No one makes the transition in one step. However, it can be useful to see the Christian life as a trajectory.

I play a lot of video games these days, but I've had long periods of even years where I don't play them at all. I think I typically feel better when I DON'T play them, but sometimes I feel better having played them. I think I look at this topic like I do having to go to sleep. I assume there is a reason I need to go to "sleep" (i.e. play games.) I mean, God designed me and has cultivated me to be who I am today, and he's still nuturing me, so he must have wisdom for why we play games sometimes. I don't think you're good or bad if you do or don't play games. I think clearly no matter what we do as humans we're bad, and only God and what he does through us is of any good.

Right now I'm trying to use video games as a tool to socialize with people. It's not perfect and in fact I've taken many blows. But I'm so lonely and cut off from people, that the little bit of intimacy I find in playing games with those I get along with feels like a blessing from God and so I would feel foolish to reject his gift.

I think your confusing desires of the flesh with the idea of a weaker faith christian. I think the only time weaker faith christians are mentioned is when paul is talking about food sacrificed to idols. I guess you could also argue the verse talking about violating ones conscience could be relating to that as well. It's not like I don't know that things like lust for example is wrong. But my flesh desires things like that and will be in constant battle until the day that I die. The idea of being a weaker faith christian is perceiving certain things as sinful that other christians do not. In this example of a video game I'm sure there are christians who have a stronger faith view certain games ok that others do not. Now yes in my opinion we should avoid certain games like GTA for example, but other games might be a case of a christians conscience. Also I dont read a whole lot so chances are if I'm recomended books I'm probably not going to read it.

I did as well when I used to play World of Warcraft and used the game to socialize because outside of the video game, I rarely have anyone to talk to. I felt kind of lost when my friends moved on to other video games. I seldom play video games anymore and when I do, they are single player games only.

When I hit the age of forties, I started having health problems and I needed to exercise. I picked cycling and then running, which I enjoyed doing alone but hoping to meet other people eventually through cycling and running but never did.

At some point, the Holy Spirit told me to pickup rollerblading (inline skating) which seemed like a ridiculous idea at first but I end up enjoying more than cycling and running and eventually started meeting other people and having new friends through the activity.

I'm shy and introvert and not the kind of person who starts conversations. I could if needed but I'm terrible at it probably from mental and psychological issues. But when I'm wearing my skates, I get the same feeling I have when playing World of Warcraft and I don't feel shy anymore. It's like stepping into a very realistic looking video game and everyone is an avatar or NPC. Sometimes random strangers or other skaters who I never met before would just approach me and talk to me. Before I skated, I felt invisible to other people. It's weird like the movie "free guy" when he first wore the "glasses" his reality changed in an instant. I guess the Holy Spirit knows what is best.

From your description I personally don't think this sounds like something sinful, but if you feel doing it would violate your conscience, then stay away from it.

You are probably fine playing it. Just please don't make it an addiction & remember to spend time w/ the Lord. If you feel God is calling you out of it for other things, do those other things.

A long time ago I used to play a lot more video games but it wasn't sitting right w/ me, I was making it an addiction & sacrificing the real world God gave for something only imaginary. I do play once in a while tho.

I don't think the problem is violence in games so much as they become idols & we fall under their spell
