  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Tariffs Are Unlawful, There is no "National Emergency," so let's get those lawsuits going!

Yes, organizations and businesses will be suing, but how long will it take to get these tariffs overturned? This article says lower court judges might be reluctant to call injunctions and the Supreme Court could take years.
Years? There wasn't any national emergency that made Trump's tariffs necessary--the article (and any American with common sense) explains that well. But there's a national emergency on the horizon--and it's started. Layoffs. Bankruptcies. Foreclosures. Recession. Depression.
Those are national emergencies far more pressing than the lame excuse for the tariffs.
BTW, in the past, if unemployment went over 6%, the federal government extended it to up to two years, and during COVID, they added health insurance to unemployment.
Do you think Elon Musk will offer that to the unemployed today? If so, would you like to buy a bridge in Brooklyn?

If tariffs are unlawful, why does just about every country have tariffs on US goods? Well, at least many used to until Trump started laying tariffs on them. By the way, the link to the article doesn't work.

The Constitution actually grants Congress the power to levy tariffs, but in recent years as a result of certain laws Congress has passed, the president and the executive branch have controlled when and how tariffs are placed on goods entering the United States.

Section 201 of the Trade Act of 1974. The act allows the president to impose tariffs if the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) finds that an import surge is threatening a U.S. domestic industry.
