  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump voters, are you happy now?

I don't know who those particular individuals would be since I have more than one post in my years here clearly stating that racists or other extremists, whether on the Left or on the Right, 'Going straight to Hell'. And that can be literally or figuratively applied.
My old poly sci prof had the idea that "liberal" and "conservative" weren't the correct designation for Left and Right; it should be liberal and ideologue.

I just go with Communist and Fascist. It's easier to sort that way these days.

We're all liberal these days anyway; but some want the emphasis on personal equality and equity enforced by the government, while others would rather place their emphasis upon individual rights apart from the government's interventions. Neither of these position has to be seen as extremist.

Funny how the market responds when Trump backs down.
He got 70 countries to come to the table. That's not exactly backing down.
The end game was always China and that's who the trade war is with now

Who would of thought it would take so much to bring Zimbabwe to heel?

How many of those countries has Trump reached a trade agreement with? If the answer is none (which it is), then he backed down.

Yes when you bully smaller countries they tend to just give in.

Russia understands this well.

Trump had a good teacher, though getting Zimbabwe to come to heel sounds like a more South African goal.

They agreed to negotiate. If they don't follow through, the tariffs go back on in 90 days.

You might have to give it more than 48 hours before you wave that flag.

The pause is to give time to negotiate
LOL.

Republicans had long opposed tariffs. Ronald Reagan said high tariffs cause markets to collapse. And Libertarians loathe tariffs.

And so, Republicans hated tariffs. Then Trump called tariffs the most beautiful word in the world. All of a sudden tariff are good.

Then Trump retracts the tariff, and people suddenly have all kinds of reasons why we don't need tariffs now after all.

Is there anything that Dear Leader could do, and the people here would say, "That was stupid"? Or will you all just make up reasons to justify anything he does?

It appears that you haven't learned that today's Republicans have changed greatly than the globalists Republicans that you appear to remember from decades ago. Most of today's Republicans are America First when compared to they way that the party used to be with the establishment ruling class globalists. Sadly, it looks like to me that the globalists of the establishment ruling class appear to be best represented by the leaders of the Democratic Party.

He’s done a lot of stupid things (mainly in 2020) I’m waiting to see how this plays out before I say if he is right or his critics are right. He is not my dear leader and I didn’t vote for him but I am waiting to see how things work out before calling tariffs stupid (He said some things he shouldn’t have yesterday but he always does that)

That is an interesting response.

I made a post condemning tribalism, which is the practice of blindly following the tribe and the leader of the tribe without thinking for one's self.

You responded with a post that looks to me like tribalism. (It's us vs them. Us good. Them bad.)

And what about Reagan's cogent argument against tariffs that I linked to? You wave it aside, since Reagan is not in your tribe.

Wait, what? Reagan is not in your tribe? I never saw that one coming.

If you disagree with Reagan, then please tell us what his argument is and why you disagree. Don't just pass it off because Reagan is not in the America First tribe.

Putting Reagan outside the "America First" tribe just shows how self-dealing and incoherent the right-wing ideologues have become. Reagan rose to prominence as a crusader that supported blacklisting his fellow actors in Hollywood for even getting a whiff of Communism. He ran as president by selling people on a nostalgic American nationalism based on military strength.

Despite what you appear to think, my post wasn't about tribalism. What I was doing was attempting to briefly point out the ways that the GOP has changed since the days of one of my favorite presidents, Ronald Reagan. But, if President Reagan were alive today, I believe that he would firmly be standing with the current beliefs of the majority of the Republican party. In fact, President Ronald Reagan's beliefs and policies were the precursor to what President Trump and the majority of the GOP stand for today.

Who is putting Reagan outside of America First? Do you have any examples other than @doubtingmerle ?

Contrasting the older Republican establishment as "globalist", vs. the current crop who are supposedly real "America First" patriots is self-dealing and incoherent.

When you look back at at George H.W. Bush and his new world order there may be some truth to what @Vambram said, but the only people that I have seen bringing up Reagan and tariffs besides @doubtingmerle are the Chinese government
