  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) just broke Strom Thurmand's record for the longest Senate speech. Strom Thurmand's speech was an attempt to filibuster civil rights legislation.

Booker's been going for over 24 hours. He's starting to sound like he's tired.

I listened for about the last 20 minutes in the car, and he made me cry twice--once when he spoke about John Lewis forgiving the man who savagely beat him on the Edmund Pettis Bridge, and the second time when he talked about his dad needing help buckling his belt as he battled Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Booker is known for wanting to bring people together, for wanting Americans to be kind to one another, and wanting a country that is kind to its people. So much kindness and compassion--after more than 24 hours standing in the Senate speaking.

The media since Election Day has numbed me with speeches filled with incoherent babbling punctuated by coherent insults based on lies.

Move over, William Jennings Bryan. Congress has a new orator in its long history.

There's been more pressure from rank-and-file Democrats to do something. Republicans aren't going to legislate anything meaningful for ordinary Americans, and Democrats can't (because they are a minority party), so it's important to use the bully pulpit to make their case when they can.

I also think it's cool that Cory Booker is a fellow Vegan (I'm also a Vegan). I just learned that recently, it's something I didn't know.

His Christian faith is also an important part of his life- he was raised Methodist but now affiliates with a Baptist church.

TBT, I favored him as a presidential candidate in 2020. Buttigieg, whom I liked, got lots of attention from being a Harvard grad, a mayor, a veteran, (was he a Rhodes scholar?) and young.

Booker was about 10 years older than Buttigieg, but he played football at Stanford, was a Rhodes scholar, graduated Yale Law, was also a mayor (in Newark, NJ), where he lived in a housing project with the poor, ran into a burning building to save his next door neighbor, set up a Civilian Police Review Board (something I think should be in every town).

He has progressive views in the Senate, including sponsoring a bill for single payer health insurance.

I think his passion and his care for all Americans shone through this speech.

I agree. If Booker ran for President, I'd vote for him in a heartbeat.
