  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

'I'm just appalled. I didn't buy my car for a political statement. I bought my car because its really fun to drive,' Susan said.
'My politics have nothing to do with that. I'm ashamed of our society and what they are doing.'
It is the latest in a slew of incidents of Tesla drivers being targeted, threatened and attacked as backlash towards the company's billionaire owner, Elon Musk.

The leaders of the left refuse to tone down their violent rhetoric. I agree with her, I am also ashamed of our society.

I haven't heard any violent rhetoric from progressives about Musk.
They are rightfully saying he is working unconstitutionally and carelessly with lack of forethought.
His cuts have hurt millions of Americans.
Very few progressives are violent--maybe a tiny fraction of a percentage.
But if you harm 70 million on Social Security (for example) even if 1/1000 of 1% have a propensity to violence that's 700 people.
Without any provocation from "the left" what he has done has left him vulnerable to a few mentally ill people.
I hope you will join me in supporting mental health services for disturbed (albeit justifiably angry) people.
Or better yet, save the social safety net.

I watched the video on AZ Family (which is linked to in the OP), and nothing about the vicious attack of this woman seemed to indicate that it was the car she was driving that instigated this attack, rather that seemed to be her and the news source’s interpretation of the events.

Perhaps we’ll get more information when the story of the man’s trial is released?

Urge your leaders to tone down the rhetoric.

"The idea that property destruction and violence are legitimate forms of protest has deep roots on the left, but it is inimical to the freedom of expression that makes democratic life possible."

No one is condoning burning Teslas. But when someone is as controversial and callously harmful as Musk clearly is, it's not outside the realm of possibility that there are mentally unhinged people who would commit this kind of violence.

After all, look at the number of school shootings in America. I don't see provocation for a single one of these shootings (much less the availability of guns to the mentally deranged teenagers who commit them), but they occur.

Better mental health care (along with taking away the stigma that prevents some from seeking help) is necessary, along, of course, with having a society with less income inequality, racial discrimination, etc. Finally, a society that claims to be Christian needs to prioritize "loving one's neighbor as oneself," and recognizing that those neighbors can be the poorest of the poor, the disabled, the unlovable.

I agree people who key or otherwise vandal Teslas are mentally disturbed. However, before they get to appropriate mental facilities, they need to be processed through the system, which may involve jail time.

My point is that there is absolutely no organized movement or encouragement from the Democratic Party or any groups I am familiar with that advocates vandalism. In my admittedly limited experience, these incidents crop up randomly, and, while never encouraged by the Democratic Party, are often begun because of justifiable anger and sometimes get out of control.
The Tesler arsonist(s), if apprehended, should be charged as with any other act of vandalism.

I don't know any people who would burn Teslas. I don't know any people who would buy Teslas, either. I do know people who own hybrids, and one electric car owner, but Tesla isn't in their price range.

Okay, so what else was likely to have instigated the attack then?

There's a viral campaign from the left billing Teslas as "Swasticars" ie Nazi cars. It's pretty silly to pretend that's not going to motivate liberals to vandalize them and or attack those who own them. It's the same thing as them attacking people for wearing MAGA hats.
But who are these "leaders" that Valletta is talking about when referring to the last quote you quoted?
And the Swasticar meme is well deserved at this point to make fun of Musk after all he's done.

People have odd opinions and destroy property.

There was this group of colonies, see, and they went to the King with this ridiculous proposal that he allow them to be free from his rule and they destroyed the King’s property and eventually they formed a Republic.

Having odd opinions and breaking things has a long tradition.

It would be great if you could get a democrat politician to publically make that statement.

Democrat politicians.

Those caught up in it are acting way too volatile for it to be passed off as a little joke.
