  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Are little people allowed in Hollywood?

Snow White and the 7 computer generated images ?

In the Live Action version of Snow White ?

Why no little people?

This is computers stealing jobs from humans.
Pretty soon, there will be no difference between creating CGI and live action, and AI's will be creating all of our entertainment for us, being able to just "generate" "whatever", and everyone employed by the entertainment industry will be out of a job. And this isn't a joke, and I'm not joking, but I am being 100% completely and totally serious about this, and it's not very far away now either, etc.

Take Care.

How many little people were cast for
the Hobbit or the Lord of the Rings ?
How many were cast for Wicked might be an even more telling question. After all Wicked is a twist on a film that had scores of little people in the cast.

I for one think that this is absolutely awesome. I think that I've pretty much watched every decent movie that's ever been made, and it seems like less than a handful of new ones get created every year. So I can hardly wait for the day when I can just ask Netflix to play me a movie and it'll know what genres I like, what 'actors' I like, and it'll just create one for me on the spot. That'll be awesome.

Movies didn't destroy theater, and records didn't destroy live performances, so actors will always have a place to perform, they just won't garner the same celebrity status that they do now. Welcome to the world that the rest of us have been living in since always.

Disney listened to Peter Dinklage and the dwarfism community about casting little people in roles like that. I would link to Dinklage's comments but there is profanity.

There's a list of "little people" who are or have been active in showbiz.

Most of them are male but there are five actresses in the list.

I remember there was a dwarf actor in a Bond film and he was in Fantasy Island. Unfortunately he committed suicide in 1993. He is number nine on the list in the imdb link.

Villechaize left a suicide note saying he was despondent over longtime health problems.[1] He was suffering from chronic pain due to having oversized internal organs putting increasing pressure on his body. According to Self, Villechaize often slept in a kneeling position so he could breathe more easily.

I recognize 2 women on that list.

One is a TV star and one is a voice actress.

My question was about women in movies.

I’m trying to understand his argument.

Are tall people allowed to play tall characters?

Maybe he thinks its not a good look when 95% of public screen viewing minutes of little people in a given year are of goofy clowns.... its not a good look. Wheres the regular person roles?

I can see the other side too - that there's a bunch of good jobs lost to CGI.

I understand your point if you are talking about a movie like
the 1971 Willy Wonka.

But in the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings
elves, dwarves, and hobbits are the main characters.

They could have been the stars of the movies.

In the Tolkien world elves and dwarves are not really little. Hobbits otoh are quite small.

That's what part of the recent SAG/SWG strike in Hollywood was about: The use of CGI to replace extras in movie background scenes as well as assistant screenwriters. Studios are unconcerned about the unintended consequences. I recently saw a YouTube video that compiled all of Brad Pitt's roles as an extra in the backgrounds of movies...there were a lot of them. Brad Pitt didn't just leap onto the screen as an accomplished actor. He spent a lot of time in what were essentially apprenticeship roles, learning how to be there. That gets lost when all those roles are done by CGI. And again, if you list all the assistant screenwriter positions that were the training grounds for the best screenwriters today, it becomes clear that we will lose as well when AI takes all the assistant screenwriting positions. For both actors and screenwriters, we'll just have "nepo babies" stepping cold into the roles and giving us lots of schlock instead of good product.

And all the other little people have criticized Dinklage for his comments. What he meant to say is that little people should not be confined to roles explicitly written for little people...but that doesn't mean that roles should not be written for little people when the story logically calls for it.

I'd say the same thing about race: Blacks should not be confined to roles explicitly written as "black." But that doesn't mean roles should never be written explicitly as black roles and that when written, black people should not be cast for them.

Cue The Twilight Zone music and Rod Sterling voice-over:

Submitted for your approval: A world with life-like computer animation and artificial intelligence writers and directors, where movies and TV shows are created at your command, just for you. But what of the actors, writers, and studios? What will they do? Tonight we find out, on The Twilight Zone.
