  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What Should We Think About the Rise of Orthodoxy in America?

Spiritual pride seeping out of this thread, similar to when a brand-new bowel movement is eventually detected from your baby's diaper.
Pride goeth before the fall, pray for our brothers and sisters!:crossrc:

you cannot give adequate refutations of the Papacy, Filioque, Celibacy, Unleavened Bread, Infallibility, and other "Catholic innovations"
It would be interesting to discuss these, but out of respect for the congregational forum rules, I'll avoid doing so here. I saw your earlier thread about getting something like St. Justin Martyr's Corner added to OBOB to allow for respectful debate - is that something you're still pursuing?

I think they will remain a minority. You definitely don’t see many Orthodox Churches in small towns or other rural areas, I know there are exceptions.

There's significant growth right now, but the absolute numbers are still quite small. Also, Orthodoxy has problems with long-term retention. I have known several people that were cradle orthodox, or long-term converts that either left or don't participate anymore.

My experiences in orthodoxy on the whole were negative. The atmosphere was one of chronic spiritual abuse. The actual practice simply doesn't live up to the theology.

On the other hand, magisterial Protestantism expects much less out of people, but I have more deep spiritual growth in those settings. Maybe you have to go through the wringer to appreciate the radicality of grace. And the people I encounter on the whole are alot better adjusted human beings who I'd actually want to be around.
