  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Donald Trump's lessons in "How to make friends and influence people" keep inspiring new behaviours.
This isn't just a meme. It's a whole thing.
There have even been discussions about whether Canada should join the EU to form new trading partners!
But - got to be careful. Democracy creeping up next to Trump's doorstep might make him uncomfortable.

On a more serious reaction, if Canada wants to join into the EU, then I don't believe that I got a problem at all with that.
First - why so flippant about the shopping thing? This ranges from cheese to F35's. As Aussies say, America is 'on the nose'. Trump has betrayed the west by abandoning an invaded democratic friend in Ukraine, snuggling up to Putin, and then slapping allies with tariffs. He seems to believe that going back to the 1890's is the way to avoid having a Federal income tax - except that every single imported product becomes the source of their funding. If you WANT TV's and T-shirts to cost double - that's fine.

Second - Trump thinks he's going to make Canada into an American state, Greenland into an American state, 'buy' the Panama canal, rename the Gulf of Mexico, and a gazillion other crazy vanity projects. YOU being OK with it may not be the issue! Trump's diagnosed malignant narcissism is the issue.

IMO, I believe that I am seeing a lot of misconceptions and over reactions from Canada and other countries.

It's not over-reaction. Tariffs are an aggressive act. Especially when combined with insults.

American products and services are tariffed by nations all over the world.
Also, if insults are enough to damage a long lasting alliance, then perhaps that alliance over these last several decades might not have been as strong as we had been led to believe.

I don't know about you, but I never insult my friends, or people I desire to be friends with. Insults are inherently disrespectful.

In many different areas of the world, and in America, it ain't uncommon for friends to poke fun with "insults" towards one another.

I'm in the US and I'm familiar with American customs. It's still considered low-brow behavior, for the most part, and not meant to be taken seriously. Certainly not something that would be used in diplomatic discourse with an ally. Trump, on the other hand, was being very serious and threatening Canada with economic or military force if they didn't agree to his demands that they give up their sovereignty. And that's very offensive and isn't funny

17% of US exports go to Canada.
77% of Canadian exports go to the US.
A minor inconvenience for the US.
A recession for Canada.
All this can be avoided simply by having fair trade.

Canadians will just sell their goods elsewhere, like Europe or China.

These are new ones on friends - when I thought a good policy might be to put tariffs on rivals.

That alliance IS not as strong as America had led us to believe.
Trump shattered it.

NATO is gone, and America has a friend of democracies is gone. While Trump might ride out this administration without a major powers war (note I said might) - what about the next guy? How can any of us in the Western world believe America will not elect some equally treacherous candidate again?

Also - remember the fall of the Soviet Union? Ukraine had about a third of their nukes.

In the 1994 Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances, the UK, America, and Russia PLEDGED to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in exchange for Ukraine transferring its nuclear weapons to Russia and joining the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as a non-nuclear state. PLEDGED! Russia invaded and now Trump is cheering them on!
What nation is ever going to trust the US again after that betrayal? The message is loud and clear. Keep your nukes - or get your own! Trump may have just triggered the largest proliferation humanity will ever seen - until "Oh oh - Armageddon by accident" finally gets us.
And Trump was so ignorant about all this HE had the gall to tell Zelensky - "You're gambling with WW3!"

Are you saying USMCA was a poor trade deal?

Just what dummy brokered that agreement? Oh wait.

Standing up to a bully is not an overreaction. If your friends tell you you’re being sloppy, acting a fool and being a jerk, maybe stop and listen to them.

how about weekly threats of invading/anexing, most of us don't find them funny. and the funny thing the stuff trumps tariffing are the things the US needs. And remind me what part of, "Canada should be the 51st state they aren't even a real country, and govenor treudo." is humour, it's insulting, rude, and a threat.

The whole Christian alt-right is throwing themselves into moral contortions trying to justify what they've done! Now Vance is sniffing around Greenland because other countries 'might be' heading in that direction ... or something.

Oh - but meanwhile there's a full scale invasion of Ukraine! America, Russia and the UK PLEDGED to protect Ukraine at the fall of the Soviet Union if Ukraine handed over their nukes to Russia and joined a non-proliferation treaty. It's this little thing called the Budapest Memorandum!

Now that the world sees how Trump keeps American PLEDGES - well - there's only one answer. Grab as many nukes as you can to protect yourself from this OATH BREAKER!

A new age of proliferation is bound to emerge.

Trump - what have you done?

France is probably going to turn out to be the big winner, since they have a longstanding policy of not trusting Americans for nuclear security. Charles de Gaul didn't fail to remember the lesson of WWII: Americans will only do the right thing after they've tried everything else first.

The great thing is that most of the people who would vote for a person who would broker such a terrible deal do not the slightest idea about how such a bad deal works, what any of this means, and they don't care.

We understand him just fine. Threatening our sovereignty and insulting us by calling the PM "governor" is unacceptable.
