  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Students are seen in the video cheering while making a "tomahawk chop" gesture, which is known to be disrespectful toward the Native American community. The Box Elder population is predominantly Native American.

Manhattan Christian apologized in the Facebook post and said the students' actions will be investigated and dealt with internally, stating:

On behalf of Manhattan Christian School, we would like to apologize for the actions that recently took place at the State C basketball tournament championship game. The student section cheer that has received publicity is not a reflection of the deep respect Manhattan Christian has for coach MacDonald, his team, and the community of Box Elder.

Box Elder holds off Manhattan Christian to cap perfect season in State C rematch

Led by a game-high 26 points from Tuarie Stiffarm-Rosette, the Bears defeated Manhattan Christian 65-60 in front of a packed house in the Butte Civic Center. It was a rematch of last year’s state championship game, which Box Elder won by four points.

This seems to be sort of a non-issue. I'm guessing that social media is where the angst is coming from. The school apologized on behalf of the students and the other school accepted it and says they didn't feel disrespected. I mean, I went to FSU. We have a Seminole Chief mascot, Chief Osceola, who comes out on horseback and throws a spear into the field and there's not a play that goes by that you don't hear the "war cry" chant and "tomahawk chop" gesture all with the blessing of the actual Seminole Nation. So, idk. Seems rather flaccid for a controversy.

It is a little weird since neither mascot (Eagles and Bears) seems to represent any kind of Native American Nation or have that as a motif.

The demographics of Box Elder, Montana are 95% Native American.

I think of the crux of the matter is that (from the first article): The Box Elder population is predominantly Native American.

If they were inclined to take offense it would be from an apparent commentary on the racial make up of the Box Elder school.

It seems to be a case where certain other people were offended whereas the Native Americans themselves weren't. Even the insistence of saying "Native American" instead of "Indian" is a political correctness initiative they didn't come up with. For the most part they call themselves Indians and don't mind being called Indians by others. If the tomahawk chop was done in disrespect, that or any other gesture done as a show of disrespect, would of course be disrespectful. But the tomahawk chop by itself isn't viewed as disrespectful. Or "cultural appropriation" etc. A lot of times it's people outside of a race and or culture who get outraged and say "that's offensive you can't do that!".

Why does that seem to be the case?

One of the people who shared the video is a relative of the game's high scoring player:

I should have clarified that as many, as in not all. It probably depends on how much someone listened to outsiders tell them how they're supposed to feel.

"Aren't you outraged over this?"

"Nah"

"Well you should be!"
